That's a really good point. I've been watching a lot of ESPN's 30 for 30 docs on Netflix streaming lately and have noticed a tiring trend of a lot of the films veering off into the territory of 1960s civil rights movement 101, which is fitting for some, but bring the narrative to a halt in the majority of them.

Just watched Still Walking. What a wonderfully realised family drama - introspective and thoughtful. It reminds me of Summer Hours.

I'm planning to pick up the following films:

1. Belle de jour
2. Les visiteur du soir
3. Secret Sunshine
4. Vanya on the 42nd Street
5. La promesse

What are they like and what other films in the collection can you compare them to?

Is there any reason to watch the BRD trilogy in release order?

I recorded Lola a few nights ago (TCM, in case anobody's wondering).

I didn't even know they put out a DVD version, I thought it was just the other studio that put out the DVD.

The 1-disc DVD was released as a normal Paramount DVD. The 2-Disc DVD and Blu-Ray sets had the Criterion brand.

I think Paramount actually distributes the Criterion release, which is why Five Below is carrying the DVD and why the Blu-Ray is in a standard Blu-Ray case (meanwhile the DVD is in a clear Criterion case. I don't understand that one.)

Has anyone who ordered Rashomon from B&N had their order ship today?

I had it ordered with Marienbad, they shipped that but not Rashomon.

You can watch them in any order. There is no narrative link between them.

I know pre-orders are supposedly no longer supposed to be part of the 50% off deal, however both Heaven's Gate and The Qatsi Trilogy are both showing up on B&N.com at 50% off. Just a heads up for those wanting to grab those...

People are clamoring for an upgrade of "The Blob," so I found it at a library to see what all the fuss is about. It's Steve McQueen's first starring role; has two commentaries, one by a film historian; a poster that warns, "The film-makers disclaim any and all responsibility for heart attacks, fainting, or other damage to the nerves as a result of watching THE BLOB;" and a short essay indicating that although the film's makers were familiar with "Rebel Without a Cause," "The Blob" is different.

It's a single-layer DVD -- scanned from a negative -- 1st printing 2000. It's lightly scratched, but there are what appear to be tooth marks on the disc. Is it that good? I'll try to see it this week.

This is the only one on your list that I own and have seen. It's essentially a play rehersal of Chekhov's play "Uncle Vanya" done in an a rundown theater in NYC. The acting is top-notch, Wallace Shawn and Larry Pine are excellent. It's really neat how the idle chit-chat at the beginning of the film transitions into the play rehersal with little to no notice, it caught me off guard on first viewing in a pleasing way. Really entertaining stuff here if you are into theater at all. The supplements are a little lacking, but that shouldn't sway your decision to buy.

At the time, Criterion didn't have a clear 2-disc case as is now used for titles like The Samurai Trilogy and Children of Paradise. Not sure if that's the only reason, but...
