Wonderful. I've got a stack of stuff from the library that I have to return in a week, so I needed to know if I had to do some prioritizing. This is perfect though.

The Killing is an *easy* blind buy... just a superb film that everyone I know likes - it's not only accessible to a select few, but everyone.

I'm tempted to buy the Three Colors trilogy on Amazon, but does anyone know why it isn't exactly 50% off? I'd rather pay the $39.99 price tag just on principle alone.

The newsletter is a Yahoo group, so I just assumed I had to send in entries via the same Yahoo account. Dunno if/where they post the # of correct entries.

It was filmed at 1.33:1 and shown in US theaters at 1.85:1. I personally think 1.66:1 is a nice middle ground.

I didn't care for it myself. I much prefer Ran, which Criterion lost the rights to.

The DP had a history of shooting 1.66:1 and it is speculated that though framed to work in both 1.85:1 & 1.33:1, the intended ratio was 1.66:1.

That's the way I watched it and it felt like it had the right amount of impact and breathing room.

Charade is a fun movie. Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant, what's not to like? Plus, it has Walter Mathau as a bad guy. Good fun!

It really looks great in any of the three aspects ratio's...it is quite amazing really. I do prefer the 1.66 and the 1.85 to the 1.33 but that is just preference as the 1.33 looks absolutely fine as well.

Quick question: is anybody else's Fear and Loathing cut short at the bottom? I have them all lined up pretty evenly at the top but it seems like the artwork for FAL is cut short compared to all of them.

Leon Morin, Priest is only $18.99 on amazon... Wow, it's been out of print and they're still desperately trying to get rid of the rest of it haha

That would bother me to the point that I would get a new one.

As OCD as I am, I can't see myself replacing my copy if that is the case. Seems a little extreme, even for somebody like me.

To each his own, though.

Wait for the re-release, it will be cheaper.

Lol it definately doesn't bother me that much but it is kind of annoying. I'm just curious to see if all the FAL criterions are like that or if mine is a one of a kind.

Of course it will be cheaper...because it will lack Criterion's extras, and may well have an inferior transfer, as well.

That's so sad! My favorite Melville (out of that, Le Cercle Rouge, and Army of Shadows)!

Amazon.com got a bunch of criterions on sale now, the shipping and levies kinda kills the price drop for me though. For 2 movies it works out to 32 dollars each. Would shopping at barnes and noble or criterion.com during their sale be a better idea?

I watched Repo Man last night for the first time ever and really, really enjoyed it. I can tell it will have high rewatchability for me. I loved all of the off-the-wall things said by a lot of the characters - very zany but never got in the way of the rest of the film.

Very hilarious. Anyone hesitating picking it up - hesitate no more. I fell that it's perfectly fine to blind buy this.

The PQ and AQ are very, very good for a low budget '80s film.

Also - it's a great package as well. The whole thing looks so thought out right down to the booklet.

I can certainly relate but I wouldn't let that worry you too much.

Charade is a lot like To Catch a Thief. The plot is definitely fun but a relatively small part of the overall package. The characters, the dialogue and the scenery are where most of the real appeal lies. Lays? Whatever, you know what I mean.

And one might not expect this from a public domain title but the transfer is really nice. I know this is something of a cliche but I really did feel like I was watching it for the first time.
