Hey guys I need some advice.

A few weeks ago my friend had a graduation party planned and I was going to get her a criterion dvd as a gift (we both like cinema studies). So I bought her Jean Vigo on DVD, I don't think she uses blu-ray.

Anyways, she ends up postpoining the graduation party and I feel like just keeping the dvd for myself and getting her something different.

But the problem is, I only really buy Blu-Rays now. I don't like the big dvd case, it looks weird against the smaller blu-ray cases. Should I return the dvd to amazon and just buy the blu-ray? I feel like it would be a hassle because I didn't pay full price for it. I had a Discover cashback credit of 8 dollars that I used towards my purchase so I got Jean Vigo DVD and Badlands Blu-ray together for 26 dollars when they were on sale at Amazon. I don't know how much my refund will be.

Do you think there is a big difference in quality? Should I just keep the DVD?

If somebody filed a lawsuit for Pacific Rim copying the look from Ridley Scott's Blade Runner, then somebody else would probably file a lawsuit against Blade Runner for copying Fritz Lang's Metropolis.

I'm sure that all of the above are thankful for the homages and acknowledgements, though. It's a look that was destined to be replicated time and time again.

I'm a bit perturbed that Kino's Blu-ray of the The Complete Metropolis is not included in the "50% off Criterion and Arthouse" sale going on, because I currently have a hankering to revisit that movie. I loved seeing it on the big screen a few years ago.

Which brings me to a fun topic of discussion...

1. Which science fiction films have emulated the look of Metropolis?
2. Which science fiction films have emulated the look of Things to Come?

The sprawling skyscraper city of Metropolis, with its railways, and such, was replicated quite well in Blade Runner and with the Coruscant cityscapes of the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

The comparably leisurely cityscape of Everytown in Things to Come predates films like Gattaca, and several settings in the Star Wars universe replicate the look as well.

I'm surprised that Things to Come has not generated a more enthusiastic response here. I thoroughly loved watching this film the other night, and am thrilled that it now exists in a good home video format.

I would wait and give the DVD to your friend whenever the postponed graduation party occurs. The DVD will still be a perfect gift at that time, I'm sure.

That way, you can take the money that you were going to use to buy a different graduation gift for her and use that to buy another cool Blu-ray for yourself.

I guess you could always sell the DVD. Great Owl's idea is best though.

I really need to buy The Complete Metropolis. I own the Moroder version but not the original, which makes me feel silly. Prices on Amazon aren't too bad. I'm just waiting for the time to get it.

I should check out Things to Come.

Lol that is an option. I sort of don't feel like going to the postponed party because I usually work on Saturdays (which is when it was scheduled for) and she cancelled it with 2 days notice. I pulled a lot of strings to be free that day. Kind of annoyed at that.

Oh....

You could give her the Jean Vigo Collection DVD and say, "In particular, I recommend the first film, À Propos de Nice, because it reminds us of the vapid obliviousness of high-maintenance people.", or something like that.

Just kidding... It's probably best to give her the DVD without saying anything of the sort.

I usually read the full review if it is a film I've already seen and just want to see what the reviewer has to say about it. But as far as reviews on this site are concerned, the only things that matter are the parts on video and audio quality of the BD. I also scroll down to read the bit on the extras and the final word too. If it is a film I haven't seen yet and do not want to know about the plot or spoilers I of course will not read the main story review! I agree also that the 3rd act of any film should never be reviewed.

Hey everybody, look at this list of Roger Ebert's Great Movies available on Criterion...

Roger Ebert's Great Movies (Criterion list)

I'm reminded that we really need Blu-ray upgrades of Le Samouraï and Touchez Pas Au Grisbi.

Metropolis:
•Babe: Pig in the City
•The Island
•Dark City (kind of)

I haven't seen Things to Come in forever. Butt I remember liking the visuals but being really unimpressed with the schematic narrative.

The Island draws quite a bit from Things to Come as well, with respect to the location at the beginning of the movie. That whole sanitized white clothes look and all.

The Island is my favorite Michael Bay movie, by long shot, and it's the only one that I bothered to purchase on Blu-ray. Always a fun movie to revisit on a slow day.

There's no shame here in the Criterion thread. The Island is infinitely rewatchable, and, although it's a straight take on the 1979 film, The Clonus Horror, I think that it's a better version across the board.
