I'm feeling the need to shake the dust off my Eclipse set, When Horror Came to Shochiku, this weekend. Some good solid Halloween fare can be found within.

The X from Outer Space is not the most highbrow film in the world, but I like all of the destruction, and I think that Peggy Neal is beautiful.

I revisited The Vanishing last week, because it's one of my Top Ten Criterion titles, and because it's the best movie to ring in the Halloween season. If you've never seen it before, then I guarantee that you will like it enough to add to a list of favorites.
I've been wanting to see this.

You do know it was shot in 70mm, right? Pulse quickening yet?

Le Promesse was pretty damn great, especially for a debut. The editing isn't as smooth as their later work, but everything else is pretty top-tier, especially the acting.

Just need to pick up my copy of The Child at the library, then I'll be done with their filmography.

I have to say I like your taste in music. It sounds like you're also into shoegaze bands. I go more for The Jesus and Mary Chain, Ride, Slowdive, Spacemen 3, Spiritualized, My Bloody Valentine, Catherine Wheel, Flying Saucer Attack, Chapterhouse, Lush, Curve and The Verve. I'm also more about sounds over lyrics. For instance, I just saw Sigur Ros (the Icelandic band - featured in The Life Aquatic) live in concert not long ago. I couldn't understand a single word or lyric but the music was so enveloping. So kudos to you too!

Went to a different Best Buy today, further away but I was in the area. They had a few Criterion BDs. Thanks to price matching and gift certificates walked out with Rushmore for $3.21!

Not surprised that both you and Owl have listed totally awesome bands as your favs! 'OX4' by Ride is my favorite song of all time. 'I Think I'm In Love' by Spiritualized is absolutely epic.. (just got chills thinking about it) 'Bittersweet Symphony' by Verve is a great song, but it's everything else that makes them awesome.

New Order and the Smiths are my favorite. Right now, however, I can't get enough of the Happy Mondays.

Oh, I love The Smiths and New Order/Joy Division myself as well. One of the best concerts I ever saw live was seeing Morrissey play here in the Burgh several years ago in 2009 (his first show here in like 23 years). I recently saw Spiritualized open up for The Flaming Lips this past summer and it was a dream come true to see Jason Pierce/Spiritualized playing live. The Lips rocked out as well but on a much grander scale (but hey, they have more $ to afford the visual presentation anyway).

If you like the Happy Mondays, I'm sure you loved the Stone Roses as well.

All of us (JW, BW, Owl) seem to have similar taste in music. Do you guys have LastFM accounts? It basically tracks everything you listen to.

(Right now I am in love with PJ Harvey)

I saw Sigur Ros open for Bjork about ten years ago. It was an amazing show.

Very, very jealous. I would definitely buy a criterion release of that concert!

Check out a band called Jucifer if you haven't already. A 2 piece and astounding musicians. A lot like PJ Harvey with some Black Sabbath thrown in. Sounds crazy but it works.

Thanks for the reccomendation! Allmusic's review of L'Autrichienne makes it sound like a killer record:

Quote:
There are few bands you can honestly say can morph so flawlessly from song to song that you could fool the average listener into thinking each track was a different band. The 2008 release by Jucifer, L'Autrichienne, is certainly one such album. With hard rock and metal becoming quite predictable and same-sounding by the time of the album's release, it's a treat to hear a band continuously switch gears. Influenced equally by skuzz-indie rockers Royal Trux as much as the behemoth metal of Mastodon, Jucifer keep you guessing as to what their next move will be. Cases in point: an anthemic Sabbath-ish album-opening ass-kicker ("Blackpowder"), a track that shows Jucifer can shred with the most extreme metallists out there ("Thermidor"), slow-as-torture Melvins-esque metal ("Deficit"), and even chimey guitar stuff ("To the End"). It takes a very talented vocalist to keep up with all the genre-shifting, and Amber Valentine is certainly up to the task, as it appears that there isn't a rock style Valentine can't sing or the band can't riff out. For those who (understandably) feel that metal has become increasingly one-dimensional in modern times, L'Autrichienne proves Jucifer is in a class all by themselves. Cheers!

Oh yeah.. you know it! "This is the One" is my favorite by them.

You guys mentioned preferring musical ambiance to lyrics.. it is evident by some of my favs that I, too, have that same preference. But when ambiance is married with some brilliant lyrics then it becomes TRULY special. The three of you have probably heard it, but if you haven't, listen to the song "Fearless" by Pink Floyd. The imagery and the story of the lyrics all established by the mood of the music.. amazing!

No Last.fm account here but I check that site often if I can't find a song online.

I saw PJ Harvey open up for U2 in 2001 and she rocked my socks off. I only began to appreciate her edgy music more after that live performance and just about fell in love with that Libra woman. I can't think of any female musician sexier than her.

Sigur Ros was simply spectacular when I saw them live. They are an international spectacle and it was awesome seeing them play right here in my small city along the Ohio river. It's the only band I can think of (other than MBV) where I am just transfixed at the music without caring if I hear any words or lyrics.

You are one lucky snob, JW (only you would bring up the fact that she is a Libra) She has one very impressive body of work too. Each record from Dry to Let England Shake is completely unique.

Get a LastFM, JW. I would totally friend you

Obviously, I am familiar PJ Harvey, but up until now, anything I've heard in passing hasn't stuck. Where should I start if I want to look into her stuff more?

I'm also enjoying some Massive Attack recently, too. and I LOVE Arctic Monkeys, but that's not exactly related to anything we've mentioned except for that they're British.
