just a PSA.. Fox Connect is having another one of their 50% flash sales today. This deal is on all movies so it is a bit more encompassing than their St. Patrick's Day or Award Winner sales that they have had recently. there are TONS of great titles available. today I got Elia Kazan's Panic in the Streets and Sean Connery Ultimate 007 Edition Vol. 1 which has the first 3 Bond movies. So 4 titles for $17.49.
Here are some of the great classic titles they have... The Apartment, All About Eve, The Grapes of Wrath, Laura, Wild River, seemingly most of the Bond movies, the Marilyn Monroe movies, How Green Was My Valley, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir, In The Heat of the Night, A Letter to Three Women, The King of Comedy, Gentleman's Agreement... check it out.. my fav deal anywhere! |

It reminds me of music from The Nightmare Before Christmas, but I know it can't be, because I think all the music in that one is originally written by Danny Elfman ... but it could be where he got the idea from. :-)

Got around to watching my Throne of Blood blu last night. I go back and forth between this and Seven Samurai as my favorite Kurosawa period epics. Tough to pick one over the other. Mifune, as always, completely owns it in Throne of Blood. Those crazed, possessed eyes burn holes through the screen. What a powerhouse that guy was. Love all of the stuff with the spirit in the forest. Just a great, entertaining movie from top to bottom. Can't wait to grab The Hidden Fortress at the next B&N sale.
The AK masterworks docs Criterion includes with their Kurosawa releases are always worth a watch. Informative and many times quite amusing. Gotta make time for the commentary track some day soon. REALLY hope Ikiru gets a blu release soon. |

It definitely won't be possible before 2016. Twilight Time licensed it from Columbia for a three-year exclusive. They released their edition almost exactly a year ago (and it sold out very quickly).

Hi All
I just saw The Great Beauty at my local theater last evening, and I must say it was the first film in a while that has caused me to forget about the clock. It's a visually stunning and sumptuous film that needs to be seen on the big screen, and the soundtrack was evocative as well. Yes, one can make a case that the movie is Fellini rebooted, but is that necessarily a bad thing? I think it works. I should add that I'm of an age with the film's protagonist, so I was able to identify pretty strongly with his issues, but even so, there is a lot that is universal in his story. Sadly, only a handful of people were in the theater with me (Mid-week, spring ice storm, etc.), so I don't expect the theatrical run to be very long. Catch it if you can. The Great Beauty was low on my 'buy' list of upcoming titles, but it's at the top now. |

Just to chime in on that Nymphomaniac: Volume I discussion from a while back, it is every bit a Von Trier flick: the over the top nature of it all, quirky stylistic choices, misogyny, and sexual focus. It's also the first Von Trier I actually liked, and I really think this is largely due to its apparent sense of humor. I didn't find any of this to be nihilistic like I do with his other work. There's a slight sense of glee to it. Yes, there are unintentionally comical moments (Labeouf's god awful accent and Thurman's hammy nature), but that's to be expected. It's surprisingly compelling throughout, save for chapter IV, and some of it is actually interesting.
Going to watch Volume II in a few. Curious to see how I react to this one, as I hear the tone is different, and there is very little Martin (which is upsetting, as she was easily the biggest asset for the first entry.) |
