I'd say it's about on par/above average with December expectations. It's usually this small.
I totally agree. Well we have October and November.

Well damn, all the wait for that?

I haven't seen any of the films coming out in December, but I do have Time Bandits on my DVR and The Night Porter is available on Hulu. I guess the only one I'll purchase will be Safe, unless I can find it on Netflix, Hulu, or the like.

Still I'm very happy with the box-set and may buy it next year.
Unfortunately, that set features some of his worst features: some of them are blunt propaganda or rhetorical works especially made for the government... still Oosone Family is one of the great post-war movies (finished fansubbing it some days ago, what a coincidence!). Honestly, they should release ON BD some later Kinoshitas which, among other things, have already been fully restored - HD-sourced and much better: Taiyô to bara, Kazabana, Tooi kumo or Shitô no densetsu, to name a few.

Anyway, very weak month, but at least we get Haynes' underrated (quasi)masterpiece Safe.

I've never seen Nothing! Is it really that good that you bought it 3 times?

On a serious note...I will have to check out The Night Porter. I've never seen it.

It is a little bit odd that there are dozens upon dozens of Kinoshita films on Hulu but Port of Flowers isn't up there - wonder why the rights situation for only that one is different that Criterion can still do a DVD but not put it on streaming?

I don't usually comment on whether a month is good or bad because undoubtedly there are those that have looked forward to certain films being released, even if I don't care for them.

That being said, I personally believe this is the weakest month I can remember. Those that disagree, I'd love to see which month you think has been weaker.

Been watching clips/trailers for The Night Porter and I am excited, definitely going to buy - think he only one I will preorder is Safe.

Oh Time Bandits is already OOP apparently lol.

December 2007, which saw the release of Two-Lane Blacktop and that's it.

Personally, I'm happy its a light month - I have spent a FORTUNE on Criterion this year.

I hate to add up but I have bought over 300+ criterion this year :/ including big boxsets like Zatoichi (£5 :P) and AK 100.

eek :/

Once you get them all you only have to buy 60-65 a year. Much more manageable.

Oh...

I was at work working on actual work work type work stuff while these were announced, so I'm just now seeing this.

At first glance, December will be a light month for me, which is good, because I'll be happy with a break after the (hopeful) November sale at Barnes & Noble.

I've always been intrigued to see The Night Porter, but I don't know if I'll have enough guts to purchase it blindly.

Unrelated to the announcements, but....wtf?

I went to Walmart during lunch break earlier today to buy the new Blu-ray of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and I stumbled across a single-disc Criterion Blu-ray of A Hard Day's Night that was encased in a single-disc plastic case.

This single-disc A Hard Day's Night Blu-ray was $15.96.

Man, had I know that this was going to be available, I might have waited to buy it instead of buying the huge edition that I currently own, even if it meant missing out on some extras. No huge regrets, but still...

Sell me your copy :P - I emailed Claire regarding this as someone else said they got it in plastic case + Persona, but Claire said they have no plastic case edition for these?

Weird.

I've had my eye on The Night Porter for a while so I'll almost certainly grab that at some point.

Julianne Moore alone will probably tip the scales on Safe.

Oddly enough the only one I'm fairly cold to is Time Bandits. I've never seen and for some reason I have no real interest in changing that.

And yes, +1 to all the 'welcome back, Eclipse'. I don't buy Eclipse sets but it's nice when they show up in the Netflix disc library.

I knew they had a single disc plastic case dvd around this price, but I didn't know about a blu version.

I might spring for Time Bandits, just because of the 1980s nostalgia value, which usually works for opening my wallet. The one and only time I've seen Time Bandits was when it aired on HBO in the middle of the night when some neighborhood friends and I were spending the night back in 1983. We sneaked out of the house at midnight or so to have BB gun wars in the other backyards in the neighborhood, and, when we sneaked back inside the house, we were just in time to catch Time Bandits.

I've never been hugely enthusiastic about Terry Gilliam's catalogue, but Time Bandits is more appealing than the rest.
