Thanks for the thoughts on 'Things to Come' a couple pages ago, everyone. I ended up ordering 'Foreign Correspondent" instead.

I know that it's an oddly realism-based movie from a director who has never focused on realism, but I love the suspense moments. I also love the camerawork during key scenes. The color of a dress during a particular death scene is amazing.

I don't know, although I've seen Under Capricorn some years ago, I remember it was the only Hitchcock movie I wished it would end because i was bored!

maybe I change my mind now if I see it again.

I was honestly so bored by Topaz that aside from one scene of what looked like a Spanish villa, I cannot recall anything about it.

Still, I think my least favorite Alfred Hitchcock film is Blackmail. I love silent films, but this one did not do anything for me.

Things to Come seems like something right up my alley though, and I have been reading reviews to see if I want it. Some reviews make me want it, some make it sound super talky and not very cinematic.

Would love a couple opinions from other sci-fi fans. I don't want to own it because it's important, I want to own it if it's a good movie.
It's a classic. That's NOT the same as saying it's enjoyable, or you'll like it, or everyone should see it.

Groundbreaking for William Cameron Menzies' design, the effects, the scope of the story.

Be sure not to miss the gunsight on the space cannon. I mean, you wouldn't want to MISS the moon, would ya?

Has anyone here seen the Tippi Hedren film Roar? They're showing it in Kansas City this weekend. It looks hilarious, despite its best efforts. I think I might go check it out.
Didn't Hedren retire from film to run a well respected big cat rescue facility?

Wow. I'm getting a little tired of James Franco, but when he portrays writers (HOWL) he's unstoppable.

Thought that was Frances O'Connor in there, but no. I'd watch anything with Rachel MacAdams, including an instructional video on how to brush your teeth if she was in it.

I have that. Some really neat extras on there I hope you'll like. And it's a good, underrated Hitch movie.

I seem to recall an extended scene in the tobacco shop that really held my interest and suspense. Been decades since I saw it though (I was younger, more fanatical about film, then)....

Gallipoli is in my number two most wanted film on Blu-ray, right behind The Grey Fox. I used to include it on my Criterion wishlists years ago, until I discovered it is one of the Paramount titles handed off to Warner. I read in another post somewhere that it is getting a Blu-ray in Australia soon, so maybe it will be region free or, if we are lucky, Warner is finally moving its arse and will release it in Region A.

I really would like to see Weir's films upgraded to Blu-ray at a faster pace; right now it is just ridiculous that his early works are almost all absent (in the US anyway). Gallipoli is simply magnificent, a standout in the Australian New Wave, and one of the great war films of all time. I would love Criterion to release it, but it does not seem likely.

It's already released, and it's region free.

On another note: Does anyone know why Criterion doesn't release "3 reasons trailers" for all of its releases?
I would like to see one for Il Sorpasso!

Take a look at this:
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=13814

Unfortunately, the original U.S. re-release trailer from Janus we had posted below was blocked by a certain studio in the U.S. (I am unsure if you can access it in Greece).
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=13513

But you can see the original unrestored trailer here:

That 3 Reasons trailer for Odd Man Out makes me want it even more. One of the best Criterion has put out. The good news is I have Odd Man Out on order. The bad news (well, not so bad really) is I ordered it from DVD Planet and it is taking its sweet time getting to me. When it comes to classic film noir from Criterion, I don't bother waiting months for a B&N sale. I need it now.

It's by no means my favourite Hitchcock film, but I think Under Capricorn is one of his most interesting. It's technically fascinating (those long takes!) and has one of my favourite Ingrid Bergman performances. I wish someone would restore Jack Cardiff's cinematography to its full glory. Public domain quality releases do it no justice.

I couldn't wait either. Bought it for $40! Don't judge me!

I actually like this film just as much as The Third Man.

I may be in the minority here, but I almost think I like Odd Man Out more than The Third Man, that's how good the former is.

I had borrowed a copy of Under Capricorn from the library, and about 35 minutes in it completely stopped, which I was kind of okay with because I was pretty bored. I think this is the first of Hitchcock's films that I've seen (and I've seen about half of them) that I was bored with. Maybe I'll give it another chance soon, but who knows. I then jumped to Stage Fright and quite liked it. Jane Wyman was pretty great, as was Marlene Dietrich and Michael Wilding. It was cool to see Hitch's everyman be a woman and have her play both sides of the story, if you will.

I've never seen the silent version of Blackmail; only the "talkie" edition since that's the only one TCM seems to show. At one time they were scheduled to show it on their Silent Sunday slot and host Ben Mankiewicz, obviously in a pre-recorded segment, went on and on about "rarely seen," "excited to present," etc and then proceeded to show the same old sound version! Oh well, maybe some day!

Probably depends on whether it's one of the Paramount titles under Warner's control. I'm planning on watching the DVD tonight, in honor of the Gallipoli Centennial.
