What a flop that was for us, one of only about four Criterions we haven't cared for.

I think An Autumn Afternoon is Ozu's masterpiece.

It's absolutely terrific to me. Aside from everything else, the cinematography is just awesome. If you prepare yourself for Fassbinder doing a sci-fi at epic length, perhaps have a nice glass of scotch ready for the intermission, and really get into it, it's such a fun film.

As if I needed my intense desire to see this film increased.

It's taken a lot of restraint to avoid this one on Hulu and wait till I have the BD. Guess I'll have to go through the rest of his films until then.

This is worse than holding off on watching Where Is The Friend's Home? until the rumored Koker Trilogy is released. I already know I don't have the patience for that.

I've never seen an Ozu film either, but the Vintage Stock near my house has a used copy of Late Spring in stock, and they're having a B2G1 sale this weekend, so it might end up being my entry into Ozu's films as well.

If you have Hulu or don't mind it being only on DVD I would also recommend Ozu's Good Morning. It's a reworking of his silent film I Was Born, But.... It's a comedy from start to finish and is quite funny. It doesn't get mentioned very often and that's too bad because it shows the lighter side of a director who's usually associated with family dramas. I should have mentioned that both versions are available on Hulu and DVD but the silent version is in an Eclipse set.

I recently bought it at Costco since it was on sale. I really enjoyed it. He certainly has a specific style of filmmaking. My first Ozu, and I expect to purchase Tokyo Story and Late Spring during the next sale.

Btw, it's available as part of a Japanese Box Set of 3 of his other colors films:Equinox Flower,Late Autumn, and An Autumn Afternoon All of them are 4k transfers from the original 35 negatives, so it makes me wonder if Criterion will eventually release their version and possibly add Floating Weeds? The box set is pricy though, so I have it on my wish list.

Was not. I'd like to see the band on the new tour but they're not coming to my state of PA...maybe on the 3rd leg they will (in 2016). I can wait. No problem.

I swear U2 gets as much talk as Ozu does in this thread.

Wait, so he did a remake of his own Equinox Flower

I wonder if those are the same masters used by BFI since those same 4 are released on blu by them, i have their releases of Late Autumn and Equinox Flower still waiting, with all the talk about Ozu i will probably watch them this weekend, and hopefully criterion upgrades Good Morning soon.

Edit: I thought the BFI ones were newer (they are from 2011), turns out the Japanese set does have new restorations from 2013.

Yeah. The pillow shots in the beginning of it blow me away. There's this really cool one with smoke and this other one with a baseball game. But speaking more of the film, it's as if all of Ozu's work was leading up to this. All his themes come to head here. Loneliness, sadness of passing time, family dynamics... all capped off by gorgeous photography.

Also, if you haven't, check out There Was a Father. It's on Hulu. One of his most relaxing films, but in the vein of his later dramas.

Not the same master, actually quite different in terms of colour and detail. They look stunning.

Yeah i was just reading that thread, comparing the screen caps it looks like Criterion release of An Autumn Afternoon is using the new master, the colors look pretty similar.

Quick question just watched The Confession on Hulu and while I LOVED it all the shakey/handheld camera work gave me a bad headache. Im interested in State of Siege as well but it's not available on Hulu so was curious if you guys know if it's handheld as well and if it is...is it as bad as The Confession? SoS would be a blind buy for me so I would want to make sure I could watch it without the killer headache lol
