Dressed to Kill announcement finally pushed me to get Blow Out today with my "allowance." Eager to see it again, first time since VHS. I even live in Philly now, where it takes place. Last time I saw it I lived in Pittsburgh and had never even been to Philly.

You will love it. Get settled in and turn up the volume and prepare for the original Filmways logo as the movie starts with the soundtrack. So great to have it intact for this release.

I've been on a Criterion buying and trading binge since the last B&N sale, picking them up here and there for between $12 and $16, and currently have 148 Criterion titles on blu-ray. If I don't find copies of them somewhere between now and the July sale, I'll definitely be getting:

Speaking of Night and the City, my all time favorite actress, Gene Tierney, is going to lead off the TCM Summer Under the Stars festival on August 1. I'm thinking that I may cancel my satellite service effective September 1, after the festival is over. I never, ever watch anything on television anymore, and with a huge backlog of films and series to watch on blu-ray, it seems foolish to continue to waste money on a service that I don't use, and really don't need.

The surprising thing about this for me is Black Moon is normally the kind of bizarre surreal film I stay far away from, yet I found it to be an amazingly rich experience that really clicked for me. I went into it completely oblivious. I think had I bothered to read up on it ahead of time, I might have steered clear of it thinking it would not be to my liking. This is a prime example of why I admire Malle and look forward to seeing more of his work. I can also point to his Vanya on 42nd Street, another type of film I would not normally consider watching, but decided to take a chance on and found it to be a master-class of acting and a fascinating exercise in minimalism. Stripped of everything except the barest staging, the characters and dialogue supply all that is needed for the viewer to imagine the wider world of a Russian country estate in which the story takes place.

Needless to say, I am looking forward to viewing My Dinner With Andre for the first time. Two guys sitting around a table talking. Who else but Louis Malle could take something so ordinary and potentially dull and turn it into an extraordinary film (or so I have read).

Seeing that you're a fan of Malle, I think you're truly going to enjoy watching My Dinner With Andre. Some might see it as an exercise in rhetoric and ramble but I found some nuggets of wisdom on the part of Andre's philosophies/outlooks on life. I related more to his character as opposed to Wallace Shawn's character. I kind of wondered if they were just playing themselves though, and if that's the case, its a truly enlightening peek into these men's lives and lifestyles.

I pretty much agree verbatim your views on Black Moon. I also usually stay away from surrealist films (Guy Maddin is one of my least favorite surrealist directors), but Malle made something here I could relate to.

He was a Barber in the film, so he wore a Barber's white coat. This could be it, but I searched for pictures, and I found this one.
