...assuming you haven't already seen it. Personally I think it's better than any of his samurai films. |

I watched my Criterion Blu-ray of The Black Stallion this afternoon.
I was surprised at how much of this film I remembered, despite having not seen it in 35 years or so. A friend and I watched it on HBO at his house during my childhood, and several sequences, particularly early ones with the boat and the cobra on the island, made their mark in my psyche. It wasn't until I saw it again just now, though, that I realized how incredible the cinematography is across the board in The Black Stallion. The intensity of the final race is hardly equaled in cinema. I would not have considered The Black Stallion to be Criterion fare, but I'm grateful that they picked it up. The Blu-ray looks incredible, especially during the island scenes, the farm scenes, and the race scenes. I did not realize until I read the leaflet that Carroll Ballard also directed Duma, a film that I rented several years ago and absolutely loved. The leaflet refers to Duma as Ballard's second masterpiece, and I'd love for Criterion to pick it up as a title as well. |

And I haven't picked up High and Low yet but I plan to... Are there any other really great Eclipse sets I should consider? |

You definitely have a treat awaiting you, then. The Twilight Time blu-ray is outstanding, the best the film has looked in decades. Leave Her to Heaven was 20th Century-Fox's top-grossing film of the 1940's, and if anything, its reputation has grown in recent years. It's an unusual film to come from a major Hollywood studio in the 1940's ... enjoy!

I've only ever watched the 1.67:1 version (the one on the first disc of the set). I feel that it isn't too open (like the 1.33:1 version can be) or too restricting (like the 1.85:1 version can be).

I watched Senso for the very first time and throughly enjoyed it. Alida Valli and Farley Granger were great in their roles, particularly Alida Valli. Beautiful cinematography and great attention to period detail. I think I loved it so much, I might pick up the other Visconti film The Leopard in the Criterion Collection before the BN sale is over.

I also think Pearls of the Czech New Wave is an important set for anyone who likes film. Given my personal taste, I really liked Kenji Mizoguchi’s Fallen Women and the Lubitsch Musicals set. I really enjoyed the Jean Gremillion set, too, but I'm not sure everyone would. I noticed another poster recommended Kaurismaki's Proletariat Trilog, but I'd suggest starting with the two regular Kaurismaki releases and, if you like them, going back to the Eclipse. i enjoy the Eclipse sets a lot. Hope you do, too! |
