I saw the 4K restoration of it, completed in 2013, yesterday, and not only is it an absolutely amazing movie, it's a seriously beautiful restoration, that needs to be out on blu ray. I hope someone does it soon.

That would be great if it happened, but I wouldn't have much hope in it. The DVD has been out for print for ages. It is a fascinating documentary though.

Criterion lost the rights to the film, and StudioCanal is currently at the helm with the rights. This happens sometimes.

And it's particularly sad, given that Criterion had the rights to the film for over 20 years. They originally released it on laserdisc in 1985 (it was one of their earliest releases) and it had never been unavailable from them up until they lost the rights in 2008.

MoC have never released a digipak and Arrow use the same style as Criterion (their Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 packaging is the same as the Tati Criterion, while Cinema Paradiso is the same as Scanners etc).

When I say digipak I use it loosely and refer to their boxsets

Watched a couple of Veronica Lake movies today: I Married a Witch and Sullivan's Travels. I Married a Witch was enjoyable, but not quite sure what warranted the Criterion release. Sullivan's Travels, on the other hand, was phenomenal and understandable why it is #61 on the AFI top 100.

I never knew too much about Preston Sturges so the 75 minute documentary on him was a good watch.

In all fairness, it's not completely fair to compare the two.

I love I Married a Witch as well though. There's nothing wrong with Criterion having some playful romantic comedies like this in their catalog.

i took a picture of it, to show what I mean. now that I think about it, I really don't like it.




and as you can see the corner of the cheap cardboard is already frayed a bit. like literally the only way to keep these in mint condition is to never open the wrapping. im pretty sure i didnt even do anything to make it look like that. jeez. this is why I prefer the regular plastic cases. they not only look more uniform, (some digipacks seem to be slightly larger, thinner, etc than other digipacks) but they're much more sturdy and don't damage as easily.

This really is a non-issue if you simply square up the spines of the individual digipaks by rubbing along the crease with something smooth - I use the cap off an old-style Bic biro.

These thin digipaks obviously come out of the factory a bit stiff - they just need a bit of straightening up. If you're careful, you'll soon get the hang of it. I did this with the Tati set, the Demy set and others - and they all look perfect.

Bend the spines backward away from the packaging and they will sit straight.

I've never seen it before, but after just reading about it a bit, I've added it to my list for November's sale. Maybe I should be glad this didn't happen a week ago though since I had bought more than enough already.

Yeah, that's what I gathered from what I read. I'm always up for a good fun movie, no matter what language it's in.

I've never seen any of his films actually. I know The Hidden Fortress will be a great place to start though.

Or do what I do-put them on the shelf with the spines inward. I don't like looking at the individual titles showing anyway. I know what's inside.
