The Curse of the Cat People is one of my top three fantasy films of all time (along with The Wizard of Oz and the original King Kong).

I love Cat People, but it ranks surprisingly low for me among the Lewton-produced horror films at RKO. That actually says more about the films I think are better than it does about Cat People, though. My ranking:

The Curse of the Cat People
The Body Snatcher
I Walked with a Zombie
The Leopard Man
Cat People
The Ghost Ship
Isle of the Dead
Bedlam
The Seventh Victim

I don't think it's coincidence that my favorites are those directed by Jacques Tourneur and by Robert Wise.

Does anybody know if THE NAKED ISLAND has been confirmed by Criterion for the US? Or, is it simply a title being talked about but not yet confirmed?

I'm a lot disappointed. Still got my fingers crossed that the door is open for both an individual release of Cat People as well as a box set for those interested in the other Lewton films.

If Criterion aren't releasing the rest of the films on Blu-ray, I can't see Warner doing anything with them, given that Criterion would have released the best known title.

I'd put Seventh Victim at the top.

I love the artwork and I hope they also sell it as a poster. Very cool.

I know nothing of Val Lewton and I'm pretty sure I've never heard of any of his work outside of this site.

Is Cat People horror? What is it like comparatively speaking? Is it light, campy, serious, dark?

I'd call it creepy. Psychological. It's not light, and it's not explicit. The horror is suggested.

In contrast, Curse of the Cat People has more explicit supernatural elements but is less about them.

I bet all the labels do because of premature posts as the studios arent ready to officially announce some titles yet

Blame the artists. Most of the leaks lately have been outed by the artists doing covers:

The Carnival of Souls
Touch of Zen / Dragon Inn
Cat People

Only Carnival was really a surprise though as the others were pretty much confirmed already. Criterion just hinted at Cat People in their newsletter. If Criterion didn't want this info being leaked out then they should be having artists sign NDA's. I have to assume they do have them sign them, but it is a little surprising how often artists are leaking out the projects being worked on.

Cat People was also suggested in the image of that creepy pale face. They alluded to it being a horror film and tagged "1942" on Tumblr.

I just watched it last night and really enjoyed it.

It's definitely more psychological than horror and the atmosphere was one of foreboding throughout.

Val Lewton movies were practically "no-budget" movies, so the directors had to make do with very little. This makes the movies suggestive with creepy atmospheres and very little special effects (unless it was possible to do on the cheap, like the famous blood scene in Cat People).

Criterion slapped him

He still has a tweet about it, though it doesn't say the title by name

I'm thinking maybe Curse of the Cat People will also be included also as an extra. Like they did with The Underneath with King of the Hill and Killer's Kiss with The Killing.
