It's no Bloodsport.

...but it's pretty good.

I watched A Man Escaped and Le Trou back to back, and I thought Le Trou was far better. A Man Escaped didn't have much tension for me because the Nazi guards were hardly in the film, they basically left him alone to his own devices. In Le Trou, the prisoners were constantly getting a shaking down, which left you on edge whether they would get caught or not.

Do Criterion no longer have the rights to Le Trou? I see there only seems to be a Japanese non English-friendly Blu-ray available.

Sadly, they do not.
It was one of the unfortunate titles that was owned by Studio Canal and is now owned and neglected by Lionsgate

to me, it is almost like implied horror. the danger is always outside of the camera's eye and that makes it more terrifying. I haven't seen Le Trou, but what you say about A Man Escaped is part of what makes it a one of a kind film.

He's asking for one title plus $20.

Seems like a fair offer, but I've been trying to save as many dead presidents as I can for the July sale.

Can someone try to sway me either way?

I'm going to put in another plug for Hulu Plus. I know their deal with Criterion is expiring, so all the more reason to get in while you can. They have a one week free trial which could easily cover a 9-hour movie. Whether you want to own it or just watch it, only you can answer but ask yourself this question: How likely is it that I will ever re-watch said 9-hour movie?

On a sad note, Alan Young, the star of TV's "Mr. Ed", as well as Androcles and the Lion, has passed away. He was 96.

In recent years I've grown fond of British director Peter Greenaway. He's made around 15 feature films (and about 70 different works in total) since 1980.

One (1) of his movies is out on blu in the US, it came out last year.

That's it. And it's not even his best (let alone good, it's kinda meh to be honest, especially since the release doesn't honor the changing aspect ratios of the theatrical screenings). If you want to see more you have to go to DVD's or go region free.

Does anyone here have countless titles, a scanner, and willing to help add images to the database?

Speaking of being an anglophile and not CC related... The Stone Roses have a new song. For anyone who is a fan, check it out. After one listen, you'll be past the excitement that "The Stone Roses have a new song!!" because it is pretty awful.
Ummm, I beg to differ. I'm a Roses fan and I like the new song. Furthermore, despite popular opinion, I also liked their second album "Second Coming" a lot, so I'm not sure what the fuss is about. I still think Ian Brown's solo album "Golden Greats" is his best though by far. We'll see how this new Stone Roses album stands up soon enough.

I'd also like to add that I'm a proud owner of a Region A blu-ray player.

Though I've thought about upgrading to one of those fancy Oppo Region-free players, I just don't have the money at the moment.

Default A Short Film About Killing(1988)

Just finished watching A Short Film About Killing on Hulu + for the second time. I probably should have watched A Short Film About Love for the first time, but I will hopefully get to it tonight. From what I recall, Hulu will no longer have Criterion films after October or is it November? I don't think I will be getting FilmStruck later this year anyway.

I really look forward to Criterion releasing The Decalogue soon(hopefully before the end of the year). It might be "fun" to watch it back to back with The Three Colors Trilogy. As far as I know, Kieslowski didn't make any comedies like Ingmar Bergman. So, if I want to have a Kieslowski marathon it will probably get kinda heavy after a while. Does anyone know of any good to great Polish comedies I can watch between the Decalogue and 3 Colors? I have never seen one.

Also, I wonder if A Short Film About Killing and Love will be included as special features on The Decalogue box set. Lastly, Zbigniew Preisner may be my favorite film composer right now. I have gained a better appreciation of how awesome his music is during my second viewings of A Short Film About Killing , The Double Life of Veronique, and The Three Colors Trilogy.

He was also the voice for Uncle Scrooge McDuck, and H.G. Wells's best friend in The Time Machine.

Well, you don't actually have to go region-free for some titles, though you still have to import titles from elsewhere in the world.

In Japan (which is Region A like the US) there's a boxed set containing Blu-rays of The Draughtsman's Contract and A Zed and Two Noughts, and DVDs of The Falls and some of short films. The two Blu-rays have also been released separately. There's a second boxed set with The Baby of Mācon, Prospero's Books, and Drowning by Numbers.

In the UK, there's a region-free edition of A Zed and Two Noughts.

In Sweden (and the other Scandanavian countries), there's a region-free edition The Baby of Mācon.

If you just want to go region-free, you don't have to go to the expense of getting an Oppo player. There are plenty of good region-free players in the $100 range.

Thank you both, but I specifically wrote "out in the US" because The Great Owl initially wrote "available on these shores." I take that to mean "out in the US" and not necessarily "region free" or "region A" released elsewhere, but I guess it's open to interpretation.

In any case, you both manage to highlight my point, which is that there's so much great stuff out there that simply isn't available in the US.

Region-free is the way to go.
