Great lineup!

I'm getting a little concerned about Dragon Inn. I though it would be released with A Touch of Zen. I hope it's not off the table. Any word?

It will more than likely be announced for the end of the year.

Great month! I'm definitely in for Blood Simple (4k upgrade on my existing MGM blu, and one of my favorite Coen films), Night Train to Munich, Cat People, and a slimmed-down Zatoichi set.

I am intrigued by the Doll movies, it doesn't look like they are considered great films, maybe cult or something? yet each got their own release, the first specially seems to have received much more hate than praise, maybe those films aren't connected somehow? sorry I haven't seen them.

So excited for Story of the Last Chrysanthemums. The artwork is great, really sophisticated and reminds me of the excellent artwork they did for Life of Oharu. It's the film that really exemplifies the fluid camerawork and "poetry on camera" that Mizoguchi is known for. Hopefully more people will talk about it after it comes out. It's really one of the most beautiful films ever crafted.

Also, it's nice for a release I want to come out at the beginning of the month instead of the end.

First one was a box-office success but critically panned, the second started off as a sequel but turned into a parody of the first. Both are definitely of the cult films variety.

They're real campy and daft. Fun movies. Certainly not going to ever be considered in the upper-echelon of Criterion titles, but they're enjoyable examples of late 60s/early 70s campiness.

Probably picking up most of the titles announced today. This has been an incredible year for Criterion and really for most of these independent labels overall. Titles are coming out at just a stunning pace from all of these labels.

Great. I should be back in town by Sunday as I see the live performance is on Sunday evening, July 10. I'll be out camping at a festival from July 1-7 and might hit the beach up in the northeast so it's a 8-10 hour drive from here in the burgh. This John Carpenter event looks really cool though and I'd consider buying tickets to see this. Did you get your ticket already?

Maybe the price for The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum will go down?

I remember when I Married a Witch and The Uninvited were released, they were announced at 39.95, and there was a bit of an outcry about it and the prices were reduced to 29.95. I can maybe see that happening for this.

Cat People and Night Train to Munich for me. The NTtM upgrade gives me hope that 49th Parallel will get an upgrade someday.

DVDBeaver reviewed the Criterion release of A Touch of Zen... Is it me, or do the Criterion screencaptures not look as yellow as the Masters of Cinema release?

I think they look pretty much the same in terms of colors, but the CC transfer looks a smidge brighter, which may give the impression of being less yellow. I'm only viewing on my tablet though.

I noticed there's a pretty big difference in the translation example shown. Not sure which ia closer.

I'd like to see Criterion get hold of Jennie Livingston's documentary Paris is Burning. It would fit in the collection very nicely, since it's a highly esteemed and somewhat groundbreaking work of 90s independent cinema.

I agree, great documentary. The subject matter may not be to everybody's taste, but it really gave me insight into that world.
