I'm almost scared to rewatch Short Cuts now. Haven't seen it in over 20 years, but I always liked it more than The Player.
I was going to suggest a trade for my copy of Short Cuts.

Mystery Train is quite good but it is uneven. The first story with the young Japanese couple is by far the best one. I thought J.J did a better job with this story telling approach for Night On Earth.

Down By Law is superior to Mystery Train but it takes a while to get going. The characters are memorable though and it has a great ending.

Don't worry.

He only lives in Melbourne.

Far away from any crocodiles.

The only crocodile you would see down there are cooked pieces of them being served in food stalls in festivals.

Okay, but regional differences aside, all Aussie women look and act like this right?

...please tell me it's true.

Sorry, not all of them do.

Australia is a country of diversity.

We have all women, in all shapes and sizes, in all colours.

We're a kind country.

Becoming Mike Nichols (which made Jon Rosenbaum's top 10 of the year) is on HBO streaming. Definitely check it out if you're a fan of his or Elaine May.

It is comparable to the best from Bresson, Bergman, Tarkovsky and Dreyer. This is top tier Scorsese to me. I cried like a baby in the end. The audience reaction was very positive. The couple sitting next to me called it the best film they had seen for a long time. The woman sitting on my left was sobbing the whole film. She said that it reminded her of the seventh seal, Virgin spring and Maria Falconetti.

Scorsese chose to tell the story in a cold, unbiased tone which is part of what made the film great. Unfortunately that will likely turn lots of audience off as well. And the subject matter is a tough sell. Not lots of people want to sit through a long, serious film about religion. They want La La Land and Captain Fantastic.

I find that hard to believe, but it is nice to hear positive reports. The trailer didn't grab me at all.

To each his own. The film will be very divisive. Watch it a couple of times yourself and judge. I am planning to watch it again on 12/22rd. It will be in a few theatres in NY and LA.

The other title Criterion released on LD (aside from The Last Temptation of Christ) was A Personal Journey with Martin Scorsese Through American Movies, which I'd love to see them do on Blu-ray. Unfortunately, Lionsgate has the rights, through their licensing deal with Miramax.
I have given up on Criterion releasing Taxi Driver, Raging bull, Goodfellas and Mean Street. The studios are likely to keep milking $ out of these. I am talking about some less popular titles such as the Age of innocence, After hours. And please let Criterion release his religious trilogy. I want a Criterion Silence package with both Shinoda and Scorsese versions in it.

And I do not know why Scorsese is so fiercely against a director's cut. I want to watch the 195 min Silence, and the 3 1/2 cut of Gangs of New York.

Justin Chang from LA Times just put Silence as his #1 film of 2016.
