Other films I thought of note that year included Spielberg's "Munich", Woody Allen's "Match Point", "Capote", and docs like Werner Herzog's "Grizzly Man" and Scorsese's doc. on Bob Dylan. So, it wasn't a bad year for movies. The Academy just got it all wrong, as usual.
2005 overall was a weak year for movies.

I own the Criterion LaserDisc of Crash (found it used at my nearest local record shop for $10 a few years back), but I would love a Blu-Ray upgrade so much.

Yeah, I wold love the Bad Sleep Well or Drunken Angel as the next blu-rays. Surprised that Criterion has been slow on the Kurosawa recently.

When Criterion first started releasing DVD's they gave us a ton of Japanese titles. Now, it's become more and more rare for them to do so. Samurai films were some of their best sellers. Wish they would have kept it up.

For what's its worth the region-free UK release released 10 years ago by Artificial Eye offers a terrific presentation of the film and some meaningful extras (The only issue is that the extras are in SD-PAL, so people will need a compatible display for the extras).

I want more Jean-Pierre Melville on bluray from Criterion.
Le Samourai was a long time coming and most welcome.

Jean-Pierre Melville was a maestro of cinema.
His films are pure cinema.
He told character-driven suspense stories visually without unnecessary chatter or noise.
All his films reward repeated viewing.

Some of his films are more acutely visual than others, but I love and admire all his work.

Wishlist? Eh, why not? I have no idea who owns what licenses and rights, so bear with me.
  • The Abyss and True Lies (...one can dream)
  • Andrei Rublev
  • Brick
  • Bringing Out the Dead (one of my top wants)
  • A Clockwork Orange
  • Come Drink with Me (is it too much to ask for a third King Hu film in the collection?)
  • Crash (2004) *
  • Dancer in the Dark (might not look good in HD, still want it)
  • The Dead Zone (Criterion, Arrow, SF--somebody's got to do it!)
  • Don Hertzfeldt collection (the kickstarter BD for It's Such a Beautiful Day is pretty comprehensive and high-quality as it is, but I'd love to see this work get more distribution and exposure, and this stuff seems like it'd be a good fit for the collection)
  • Eisenstein Sound Years upgrade (Ivan the Terrible / Alexander Nevsky)
  • The Elephant Man
  • eXistenZ (in dire need of a good, remastered edition)
  • Fahrenheit 451 (I know there's a BD on it already now, but it could definitely be improved)
  • Funny Games (1998) (probably in Kino Lorber's ball court still, but I have no idea)
  • Ghost Dog: Way of the Samurai
  • Irreversible
  • Lost Highway
  • Memories of Murder
  • Pink Flamingos
  • The Princess and the Warrior (maybe--it kinda interests me and I'd like to see a Tom Tykwer film in the collection, not sure if there's enough interest in this title though)
  • Ran (4K remastered)
  • Slaughterhouse-Five
  • The Stepford Wives (1975) (is this even possible or warranted through Criterion? I dunno)
  • Until the End of the World (come on, it's been rumored for years now and I've held off on imports. I'm not entirely sure I want to sit through it a second time, but it would be exciting if they put the full-length cut to disc)
  • Village of the Damned (1960) (double feature would be sweet though)
  • What About Bob?
  • World Cinema Project Volume 3
  • MOAR KUROSAWA!!!
Not sure if I'd buy Lolita if it comes out (had it on DVD and BD, never bothered revisiting it). But I do hope it comes into the collection for everyone else's sake.

I'd also find it thrilling if some of the action and blockbusters that used to be on LD and DVD got reissued on BD--I'd totally buy CC BDs for Armageddon, Hard Boiled, The Killer, Akira, and RoboCop. Doubt they'd happen though.

[Show spoiler]* = psyche.

I would like Criterion to tackle Sam Peckinpah's Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid (MGM 1973 > WHV 2006).

4K scans of three versions included in the box-set:

1 - May 1973 Preview version of the director's workprint. This appeared on the Z channel for the first time, then on laser-disc in 1989. Two important scenes were inexplicably missing from the laser-disc, either dropped by accident or cut because there was insufficient time on the discs. This May 1973 Preview version was mistakenly labeled "director's cut" on the laser disc creating endless of confusion. It was NOT the "director's cut." Be sure to include the commentary by Nick Redman, Garner Simmons, David Weddle and Paul Seydor.

2 - 1973 Theatrical Release. This is the version, the shortest and most incomplete version, we all fell in love with. No one realized it was badly truncated by MGM's head James Aubrey until much later. Contains all the classic Peckinpah scenes finalized by his team of editors. It will need a new commentary by Nick Redman, Garner Simmons, David Weddle and Paul Seydor.

3 - 2005 Special Edition. Academy-award nominated film editor and Peckinpah biographer Paul Seydor's rescue of the film. And what a rescue it is! He put all the missing footage back in, restored the structure and amplifications to the film, except for a few choice pieces Peckinpah wanted taken out (but those are in the May 1973 Preview version so they're not lost). I disagree with him on the ending, but every decision he made, apart from the ending, was right and true to Peckinpah. This is authentic, the longest and the most complete version. Be sure to include the commentary by Nick Redman, Garner Simmons, David Weddle and Paul Seydor.

Rudolph Wurlitzer's script was published in a paperback book. Bob Dylan's beautiful score, including the hit song "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" became a best-selling album and CD. If Criterion wants to toss those in the box they'll get my money for sure.

And finally -- this is very important -- Criterion is to have their people do the final grading and color timing. Do NOT under any circumstances let Ned Price get his hands on the project nor exercise any authority over it. So long as Criterion handle the film it should come out alright.

I've got this Artificial Eye Blu-ray at home as well.

Caché (Hidden) is one of those films that works better with a minimum of supplementary knowledge, so I'm just happy to have the main feature.

My only gripe with this disc presentation is that the subtitles are really really small.

I saw Caché at an indie theater here in Atlanta when it was released in my neck of the woods. One particular scene (You'll know which one.) elicited the most shocked audience reaction that I've ever witnessed in a theater.

I wonder if we'll get Haneke's Funny Games any time soon.

The second I import that, they’ll announce the Criterion. That’s what happened when I broke down and bought the $5 Silence of the Lambs. News of the restoration broke.

This would make my movie fandom year. Love Peckinpah and want anything of his in the collection. Right now we have only Straw Dogs and a couple films that he is vaguely associated with: One-Eyed Jacks (where he was the initial screenwriter) and Riot in Cell Block 11 (Dialogue director). We need more.

Can't remember seeing any discussion about an upgrade of Floating Weeds. I've never seen the film, and was thinking of adding the MoC release to an Amazon UK order. But I do recall some concern over that transfer (caps in the review here and on Beaver look rather "green"). Anyone have any info, or have the MoC disc and care to give an opinion? Thanks.

I'd hold off for the time being. There's a new 4K restoration which will hopefully retain the vibrant colour palette of Criterion's DVD. The master MoC used doesn't look right. The blue/green appearance messes with the distinct colour choices Ozu made.

If you're feeling impatient I would personally recommend the Criterion double disc DVD set which comes with some great extras and the silent version Ozu made decades earlier (a strong film as well).

There have been new Ozu restorations from Japan kicking around for years that haven't been put on disc by Criterion yet so it's possible you could be waiting a long time for them to upgrade Floating Weeds.
