Here's a list of all of the Dual-Format editions, with the ones in bold being those that have already been re-released.

Fantastic Mr. Fox
The Freshman
The Great Beauty
Investigation of a Citizen Above Suspicion
I wonder this as well, and have been holding off on the above in hopes they are re-released in smaller, lighter, standard packaging.

If they do plan on it, they are really taking a long time to do so, most likely waiting for current stock to wipe out I guess. I also presume those with books and the box sets probably won't be changed.

Ran is amongst my highest-anticipated Criterions, so this is great news. Saw the restored 4k at a film festival a couple of years ago.

In case Ran is going to be released by Criterion, people looking at them to reverse the alleged color grading issues in the SC release shouldn't be too hopeful. Criterion's track record is to accept whatever the director / DoP approved master is, regardless of any perceived revision.

How sure are we that the SC version is even wrong? I vaguely recall it being quite hotly debated.

We're not sure, that's why I said alleged. The grading was approved by one of the cinematographers who worked on the film. But several forum experts and Dr. Svet in his review have expressed unhappiness with the grading of this release.

People express unhappiness with all sorts of correct grades though (see also: A Space Odyssey, 2001).

If it's a "director / DoP approved master" they probably wouldn't be allowed to change it anyway, would they?

I'm clamoring for a set next year. Back in the old laserdisc days (circa vaudeville and the Black Plague) Criterion announced 5 Godzilla films around the time of the release of the '98 version that never came to pass...would feel like an appropriate bit of Godzilla's revenge to get a set announcement or release when the new Godzilla hits theaters.

Possibly not, but Arrow did get around that by offering a LE "original theatrical" cut of Michael Mann's Thief which had a warmer color scheme claimed to be truer to the theatrical release color grading.

Yes, but a lot of people claiming they know what is correct really don't. I'm always amazed when I read posts long the lines of "I saw the film in the cinema when it was first released in 1968 (using 2001 as an example), and can say definitively that the BD color grading is wrong."

Then again, even the Director and DP can disagree (witness Friedkin's disastrous revisionism on the initial BD release of The French Connection).

I thought the "Ran" remaster looked solid. It most certainly blows that old master that got passed off as "HD" years ago. The restoration work was carried out by Eclair, who have come under controversy with their recent "The Producers" and Rambo remasters for having similar yellow pushes with a slight hint of green.

To my eyes, the Criterion DVD of Ran looks good. Certainly prefer it over caps I’ve seen of the BD releases to date.

I’m wondering the same. I may just hold on to my butt for a while longer and wait for a big Kurosawa set instead of buying individual future releases.

(It will be insanely tough to turn down the Kurosawa noir films, though. Stray Dog, Drunken Angel, The Bad Sleep Well)

With regard to Ran, I want to see that on a big screen someday.

I saw the restored version of Ran in theater a couple of years ago and it was great. It honestly didn't look nearly as tinted as the caps made it. I bought the BD from the UK after, but haven't watched it yet.

They just have to put out a complete Kurosawa after the success of the Bergman...

The complete Kurosawa was my dream Criterion release and I held off on buying any of the individual releases before caving a few years back.

Now I'm in that spiteful stage of not wanting it to happen so I won't have to mull over making that call.

So far, I’ve got the complete Charles Laughton Blu-ray set and the big Ingmar Bergman Blu-ray set. Others are soon to follow, I’m sure.
