Not sure about your second point, but Alexander Payne shot Nebraska in color with the intention of releasing it in black and white. The color version was for the South American TV market I believe.

I'm sure I read that films lose 50% of their value in TV and other auxiliary markets if they are in black and white, so from a business point of view it's understandable why companies are reluctant to release B+W films.

If true, and I'm not questioning you at all, that makes me very sad about B&W films losing so much value.

I'm not sure what else can be done that the 25th anniversary Blu-Ray has not done already? It's a pretty solid HD release if you ask me.

I just wish Criterion would keep chipping away at the Paramount titles....

What's the next Kubrick film to come to Criterion? Lolita? A Spartacus upgrade? Eyes Wide Shut?

I would love all three, particularly Lolita. I recently saw a 35mm screening that made it clear to me that a new scan was needed on Blu-Ray. Plus, I would love to see some modern commentary on the film.

Of course, Eyes Wide Shut is the one most in need of a remaster.

Lolita deserves the Criterion treatment. That bare bones blu-ray just doesn't cut it. Hey they did it with Barry Lyndon. I think Lolita is next.

Hah. Yes! It's called getting old

As for TV, my main concern about movies being made for TV is aesthetics. I understand that everyone uses the same equipment now and TV looks better than it used to etc etc, but I still think the influence of television on film has generally been a net negative when taking the historical view, especially in the visual department.

As long as films made for TV still resemble films in the traditional or semi-traditional sense, that's fine by me, but I think the medium-doesn't-matter position is not quite correct.

Perhaps in this era of scaled down ambitions it probably doesn't matter. It isn't like there are many Kubricks or Ophuls type directors around anymore. Even many acclaimed American directors today are essentially making big budget TV films.

Given the excellent restored edition from Universal, it would be difficult to get all that excited about a Criterion Spartacus upgrade. But Lolita and/or Eyes Wide Shut would have me cheering out loud.

Since Princess Bride was a Criterion LaserDisc and not DVD [before Blu-ray became a thing] I think it is possible for them get Lolita back and release an upgraded version from the LaserDisc but it's hard to say and plus there are so many good ones on LaserDisc they have not been able to put on DVD much less BD due to rights and such but I would not say never since everything is a possibility.

Okay which one is more likely to be next? I’m gonna way Lolita solely for the fact of that bare bones Blu-Ray.

Just guessing, I’d say Lolita as well. I don’t see Warner putting anything more into their edition, while we know Criterion would flesh it out. Still, I’m rooting for both.

I'm hoping for Lolita and Eyes Wide Shut, though Lolita is most likely.

My TV is problematic so I probably shouldn't push any opinion on PQ. But I find dialogue levels to be inconsistent and dialogue volume to be weak overall. Not sure how much of that is native to the source, though.

Out of all of the SK films I would like an upgrade from the LaserDisc for 2001 A Space Odyssey more than anything though. Especially if they did it like the Princess Bride as a DigiBook.

With Arrow releasing Robocop, I want to see Criterion do the first Terminator movie with this year being the 35th anniversary of the first film.

I'm not sure if anyone else has picked this up and posted it yet, but Filip Jan Rymsza, the film's producer, tweeted earlier this month that "there's a chance" Criterion will release The Other Side of the Wind on blu-ray.

Hopefully, Lolita. The existing Universal version of Spartacus is top notch, I don't understand why people keep wanting a Criterion release?

If that's the standard (and it's a very reasonable one) I think Lolita should take a back seat to Eyes Wide Shut.

Lolita could stand some tweaking. EWS could stand a complete do-over.

I think someone posted it months ago, but it’s exciting prospect! I personally hope it’s parked with an announcement of The Trial!
