A little background:
I recently picked up 17 titles on a shopping trip this past weekend to the states at B&N.

Last night I popped in Scanners and at the 23:55 mark it proceeded to glitch out. Luckily after about 30 sec or so, it skips to the next playable part. This disc’s only exposure was from case to player. I looked at the disc and noticed two minute scratches on the disc, which I gently used a microfibre cloth on - but no avail.

I played a couple discs afterwards, and then ejected them to look at the surface - perfectly clean. So, whew, not the player.

I’ve reached out to Criterion about a possible disc exchange, but I’m not holding my breath. I’ve done this since I am a Canadian, and don’t know B&N’s return / exchange policy for in-store purchases.

——
So, a tad unnerved at this one flawed disc, I checked all the discs I picked up. Three have somewhat of a physical mark on them - I’ll watch these this week to ensure they play properly. These are all titles released the past two years.

Now, I’ve been buying Criterion titles since 2011 and they have always been in perfect physical condition. The first disc with physical issues was the Police Story set. Scratches galore so I exchanged at amazon.ca, for not a perfect but near perfect set.

So what’s going on here? Has my luck run out or has the quality of manufacturing been affected? I’m prone to think the latter since there’s mention the manufacturer is now in Mexico...

Apologies for the long winded post, but I figured maybe there might be one or two people who might share similar experiences.
I would try one more thing before attempting to get a replacement. Wash the disc with warm water and dish soap. Then gently dry it with the microfiber cloth. Then give it another go. This has always worked for me.

If it's scratched, rather than dirty, all the cleaning in the world won't help.

I've had the exact same issue with scratches on Criterion discs going back a few sales now with the Made in Mexico discs. It's extremely frustrating--though I can't say I've noticed many problems playing the discs.

I've only seen a few mentions of this problem in the forums and I'm guessing most people don't check their discs unless there's a play problem. Clearly it's a systemic problem somewhere in the manufacturing chain. It's no one-off.

The quality control overall seems to have declined. I see way more warped or wrecked covers on new releases these days. It's tough for the condition-freaks.

The good thing is Criterion should be able to exchange any defective discs for you.

Yes, and I even tried it on my PS4 as well, same issue at the exact same point. Definitely a manufacturing defect with minute scratches.

If anyone could answer this for me I'd appreciate it, how often does Barnes and noble do 50 percent off sales on criterion blu Rays?

You may already know that Criterion also has two 50% events every year - typically around Feb/March, and October. They are only 24 hours duration, but you get one point for every dollar spent, and after 500 points you get a $50 gift certificate to use on the site. Definitely worth signing up for Criterion emails if you haven't already, to ensure you get advance notification of these flash sales.

I haven't bought a single movie during the 50% off Criterion sale this month, but today I went down to the local B&N to see what they had, and the one movie I wanted to buy (1984) was out of stock. The clerk looked it up for me and a total of only 2 copies came in! Too bad.

My night however was saved by seeing the new Quentin Tarantino movie at the big cineplex though (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood). Absolutely brilliant film! RUN, don't walk, to see this one.

Is Broadcast News a pretty safe blind buy for a fan of Albert Brooks/Modern Romance/Lost in America?

Incidentally, since the post about Godzilla's "evident cheap traced unfinished vector stills" really stuck under my craw:

Easily yes. Without looking I'd bet Broadcast News cracks the top 5 for Brooks, Hunter, and Hurt.

Yes. Albert Brooks plays a very Albert Brooks character in Broadcast News.

As long as you know that it doesn't feature Brooks in the way that those other two films do. He's a supporting role here, with much less screen time. Some great scenes for sure, but Hunter is the star of the show.
