![]() Quote:
The documentary Image Makers: The Adventures of America’s Pioneering Cinematographers shows the long opening shot of the movie, and talks about the challenges Karl Struss faced in making that a reality. First off, it’s very obvious in that first shot that the talkies were still very new, and they were trying to figure out how to record sound. Sound movies, to that point, were very static in nature because of the technical difficulties sound presented. When Dr. Jekyll’s butler is talking to him, his lines are fairly hard to hear. As he travels through his home, preparing to leave (and this entire progression is done in first person perspective), the sound is inconsistent until you first see the doctor in the hall mirror. Then he resumes walking towards the door, out his Victorian mansion, and into his hansom cab. When you comprehend the sheer size of the camera used for this scene, you really appreciate Struss’ brilliance, and his sheer audacity for even attempting such a thing. March’s performance is really spectacular. He was perfectly cast: the English gentleman one moment (though he’s from Racine, Wisconsin, not far from my hometown), and the monstrous Hyde the next, a beast liberated of all behavioral pretense. It’s fun to watch how vigorously he throws himself into the part. There’s an added layer of physicality that Hyde demanded, as well, jumping onto sofas, and over bannisters, and in the final scene where he’s cornered in his laboratory, crawling up the bookcases. It’s become one of my favorite horror films, and I’d very much like to own it. |

It feels like every year this is suppose to be coming... I don’t think it will be safe to say until it’s officially announced. People here were also saying a few months ago that there was no way on a Fellini box because of WKW. Hope they hurry up and make it happen

Went to watch my Bigger Than Life disc today and discovered it appears to be suffering from disc rot. It's not on Criterion's list of affected titles so I shot Mulvaney an email about it. It has bronzed significantly and I could not play the disc without issues.

Lee Kline hinted at it during a podcast interview with the Home Theater Forum and Peter Becker liked a tweet mentioning Lee Kline hinting at it during that podcast.

For what it is worth, I can confirm that I owned a copy of "Bigger Than Life" which also had beginning bronzing and I sent it in and noted that I had read online that other had problems with some printing of this disc even if it is not on the "official list", and I got a new disc in return.

I became aware of that movie due to Kubrick's effusive words about it. He was a hard man to impress (based on the interviews on Taschen's book), so it must be really special.

GIRLFRIENDS is good, and it introduced me to Amy Wright, who was kind of a younger "character actress."
I think that GIRLFRIENDS was filmed in 16mm. |

On Criterion's site it shows "Currently Unavailable" which means it is out of stock (the DVD is still in stock). If it is out of print then Criterion will state "Out of Print".

I haven’t seen it rumored but have seen people say they want Criterion to release Boys Don’t Cry It’s a pretty good candidate... it’s an import film in the history of queer cinema, was just added to the National Film registry, The more female directors in the collection, the better. Its never had a bluray. It’s Fox a title. The Brandon Teena Story doc would be a great supplement. I think they should release it
