Default Criterion Appreciation Post

Just wanted to say Criterion is the best distributor, their blu-rays are genuinely of high quality and don't have those annoying pirating notices other blu-rays do.

Release shenanigans aside, it’s a terrific film and one that seems to be still quite underrated in Fuller’s body of work. I have read some criticisms about some of the acting, a script without narrative focus and a lack of nuance. Well anyone criticising that last aspect has clearly never seen a Fuller film because this is like all of his other work: brash, to the point and on the nose, but also made with a furious ferocity.

And as to those other criticisms, some of the acting is indeed spotty but Burt Ives and Paul Winfield perform well and the dog itself is a marvel to behold. The script does seem to shift around narratively, and sometimes also awkwardly moves between genre picture and something more, but it has a pretty clear thematic focus at its core and I found it compelling enough to hold it all together. Another terrific Ennio Morricone score helped a lot too.

I saw it off Eureka’s blu which is from an older HD master prepared by Criterion for their DVD but it still holds up pretty well. Being a Paramount film, unless Criterion get access to a new restoration, the Eureka will probably be the best way to view the film but hopefully Criterion can find a way to release it from a new restoration.
I watched my MoC the other day & thought it was a great film. Really liked how you never knew what the dog was gonna do especially with Keys
And then the original owner showed up, loved that part

The dogs & their handlers were superb

After watching Life of Oharu last week, I bought Mizoguchi's Fallen Women from amazon
Then watched Ugetsu yesterday & bought 47 Ronin(I had previously bouht the wrong version of 47 ronin after watching it somewhere before knowing of the director)

Any reason why Criterion have mot released this film by Mizoguchi yet?

Of even greater absence is the work of Keisuke Kinoshita. I believe only two of his films have received a standalone release (one DVD-only), with five of his WWII-era films bundled into a barebones Eclipse series release. Despite this, they have rights to an extensive number of his films, available on The Criterion Channel.

I doubt Mizoguchi's version of 47 Ronin has received a BD release anywhere, even in Japan. It probably has not yet received the restoration that will make for a suitable HD release.

I asked about it a few pages back. It hasn’t had any BD release, a few DVD’s only.

Yup, dvd only

A brilliant film of one of my favourite tales

I definitely recommend seeking out Darke Horse's rendition of it with wonderful art by Stan Sakai(Usagi Yojimbo) & had Kazuo Koike(writer of Lone Wolf & Cub plus Lady Snowblood) on it as a consultant

Now that I have the Zatoichi boxset, I finally decided to watch Takeshi Kitano's version of the story which I have had the steelbook for ages & was wondering everybody else's opinion

I really liked it, especially how he used people to make music such as the hoes & water in the field & the building in the field. But not to put the film down, probably my favourite part was the festival dance at the end. That & the bodyguard slaying the gang & Zatoichi in the rain

I have the eureka MoC Paths of Glory. It uses the same source as the criterion & while not so many, a decent amount of extras that are different to Criterion. If you are a fan of the film, worgh getting both maybe

Have to look out for it during Eureka's sales to see if it pops up. Which reminds me I want to get the Eureka Wooden Crosses Blu. Right now, I have the region free but barebones Pathe BluRay.

It's also part of the Eclipse 4: Raymond Bernard set. That's where I first saw it, and I was amazed by it. Of course, that's DVD and with no extras. I don't remember it looking bad in that version.

With Marriage Story getting a Best Picture nom, does Criterion announce it tomorrow?

I would think they would have to wait a year after the films initial release before they could release it. I think it comes out at the end of the year or early 2021.

Hoping for a Japanese release with April's line-up. The Human Condition trilogy is long overdue.

Doubtful. Probably around November. Based on the Roma announcement, it will be about a year after it streamed.

That's right. I forgot they're going to want exclusive distribution, so to speak, with streaming. Well, that's one on the long term want list.

With it starting in June, I could see the box set for that coming out in November.

Well, that's disappointing on two fronts:

(1) The retrospective starts in June, which means that we won't see a BD collection until the end of the year at the earliest (hopefully, it'll be available during the November B&N sale).

(2) The assumption here is that Criterion's WKW set will be just the seven films in the retrospective, which means no 2046 or later films. And it appears that Ashes of Time (in either version) is excluded. On the plus side, it appears to include a Director's Cut of the short film "The Hand", which has only appeared before as a segment of the anthology film Eros (which isn't available on BD).

Don't get me wrong, I'll be happy to see new restorations of the films that will be in the set, but I really, really wanted 2046 on BD.
