Premium channels tend to differ on aspect ratio presentation. Showtime and EPIX have a consistent track record of showing films in the right format they were presented as. HBO/Cinemax have boosted their game, though it still remains baffling at some films being cropped. Die Hard was presented 1:78 on Cinemax but Sexy Beast was presented in it's original AR of 2:35. Starz is abhorrent on treating their films with care.

Honest question because this still confuses me.... if you have Netflix with 4K added to your account with a proper internet speed, wont watching on Netflix 4K with Dolby vision have a better picture than the bluray even if it is streaming? I know the audio will be better on a disc and supplements and I prefer physical overall, but just wondering. I’m really hoping that maybe The Irishman will be Criterion’s first UHD

Well, that's the question, isn't it? I have a Netflix Ultra HD (4 screens) account ($16.99) hardwired with FIOS Gigabit Ethernet (960 MBs) to an LG OLED and Apple TV 4K, with the sound processed and room corrected through a Denon with Audyssey.

Needless to say, Netflix titles in Dolby Vision/Atmos on my setup look and sound spectacular, including Roma and The Irishman. I give the nod to the LG app over the Apple TV Netflix app for superior audio.

I do plan to purchase Roma, which is my favorite film of 2018, and I'm a curious as anyone else how the two will compare.

My take is the HDR variable that will prove to be the most influential factor, one way or the other.

I'm curious what the conversation was about releasing Roma as a Blu-ray as opposed to a UHD. My assumption it is either a refusal by Netflix to license a UHD release or Criterion to release a UHD title, or perhaps the cost and related pricing implications (for both Roma and other Criterion titles), data that illustrates most Criterion buyers do not own UHD players or simply they are only targeting those who do not subscribe to Netflix.

As I shared, I'm picking up Roma, but I can't say I'm as pleased or excited about the release than if it was a UHD disc.

Personally, if the PQ on the Blu is inferior to the Dolby Vision 4K stream, why would I watch the disc over the stream?

Furthermore, the codecs used for streaming will only improve upon time – my guess is that we'll have an 8K stream from Netflix within the next 24 months.

A disc is static. Once it is surpassed by advancements in technology, it may still have value, especially to a collector and for nostalgia, but that's that.

Just of what's confirmed so far:

Very excited for "Teorema", "Roma", "Bamboozled", "The Cremator", "Come and See", "The Irishman", "Portrait of a Lady on Fire", and "Marriage Story".

Of what's hinted at, so far:

Fellini box set similar to that Bergman set would be most exciting; Wong Kar-Wai set; if we're correct about Bruce Lee and Agnas Varda sets, too, that would be great.

Of what's rumored:

Would love to finally see the likes of "After Hours".... More Orson Welles...

And the ever-present wish-list:

"Dersu Uzala", "The Devils", more Scorsese, more Pasolini, "The Painted Bird", "Fingers", and many, many others....

Or simply enjoyed by those who just like watching films and have no desire to get caught up in a race to eke out ever-smaller gains in PQ.

So since Criterion worked with Disney to release Notorious and Rebecca, is it not entirely impossible that they could release The Straight Story?

Sometimes I wonder if Criterion will start increasing monthly releases to more than 5x.

I think instead they will ramp up box sets. So to release more titles in less announcements!

I dunno. I've seen a number of films on Netflix not in OAR, though admittedly they were older films that probably weren't provided to them by their studios in proper AR.

Ones I can think of off-hand are the Doris Day films Move Over, Darling and Do Not Disturb, which were in 1.78 instead of 2.35, and Bread and Tulips and They Might Be Giants, which were 1.33 instead of 1.85.

I can understand the desire to have the best presentation possible, even if "second place" isn't all that far behind. But the problem with diminishing returns is the ever opposite-of-diminishing monetary investment. It took me a good while to finally upgrade to 4K, and it took the announcement of a UHD of 2001: A Space Odyssey and a prospect of maybe possibly eventually getting one of Lawrence of Arabia to get me there.

I'm of an age where -- for financial reasons -- I can't keep continually upgrading, and the mantra "what I have now is good enough" is taking up a growing part of my mental processes.

Is anyone here a fan of Guy Ritchie's movies? I wonder why Criterion hasn't added Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to the collection? I even studied the movie in a film class back in college and analyzed it with the teacher and fellow students.

Well, last night I saw his new movie The Gentlemen. What a fantastic film! I saw it at a 10:15pm showing (on a Friday opening night) and there was NOBODY else in the theater (except for me and 2 friends). We had the whole theater to ourselves and laughed out loud whenever we wanted to, talked out loud whenever we wanted to, farted out loud whenever we wanted to, put our shoes up on the seats whenever we wanted to, and clapped our hands whenever we wanted to (not that we necessarily clapped though, but we could have without fear).

It was so

good, I even left my umbrella in the theater, but ending up using my friend's umbrella to walk back in the rain to the car! LMAO! Don't worry, I didn't sacrifice

for this feat!

The editing was exceptional, the characters were hilarious, the soundtrack was above and beyond, the writing was remarkable, and the directing was top notch. I never was a big fan of Guy Ritchie but now I am, and its great to see him return to his roots of intelligent and stylish gangster cinema. Bloody good.

I've been lucky, then. Although the number of films I watch via streaming is very small relative to BD, and usually a spur-of-the-moment thing - due to something I've just seen or read that's prompted a sudden interest in a certain title.

I hear you. I started out with VHS and all the disappointments that format entailed, and in some respects still can't believe how good a majority of BD releases look. I've purchased precisely three UHD titles, but only because I didn't own the BD, and one is included. I may move to a 4K setup at some point, but it is not a priority. I'm clearly a much more forgiving viewer than many around this site, but back in the 80's when I started collecting I could only dream of the choice and PQ that BD offers today - and I'm happy with that.

I do like him. My favourite is probably RocknRolla. I also enjoyed The Man From U.N.C.L.E. more than most. He brings a lot of style and flair to his films. Planning to catch The Gentlemen with my girlfriend next week.

My feelings about Guy Ritchie are mixed. Certainly his crime films (LSTSB, Snatch, Rock N' Rolla) have a lot to them that I can admire, but they haven't been films that engaged me enough to revisit them.

I am a bigger of of his adventure films, like the Sherlock Holmes movies with RDJ, and The Man From UNCLE. I know they're not very well-received, but I kinda liked some of the things he did with his King Arthur movie, and I found Aladdin surprisingly watchable. I suspect I like these more because they're more up my alley (adventure, fantasy), but they still have some aspects of the Guy Ritchie brand and wit. The genre and style mixing makes them more interesting imo.

I wouldn't object to Criterion obtaining the rights for Ritchie's earlier films (maybe even a box set, how cool would that be?). They could use a remaster (LSTSB needs one badly).

I really like Lock Stock but it’s a real stretch to call it intelligent cinema?

I haven't made my mind up about Ritchie yet.

Lock, Stock... and Snatch were both an unexpected treat. Vinnie Jones, especially, was a friggin' hoot!

The two Holmes films were kind of "enh" for me, as was U.N.C.L.E. (though I liked it better than the SH films). I probably should give them all another watch.

And I have Rock n Rolla on BD that I haven't gotten around to yet.

Haven't seen King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, though the trailers and reviews were a bit off-putting. And Swept Away I'm not inclined to watch, as I avoid Madonna whenever possible (though Ritchie's BMW short film with her, "The Star" was fun).
