They now carry both formats and dual format releases would have saved them money since they can get a Blu-ray+DVD for $40 versus separate Blu-ray and DVD for $70.

The Elephant Man is one of Lynch’s best films. And the two Dassin noirs are incredible.

I don't know about your local library, but my county library rarely buys just one. So, for arguments sake, lets say they buy one Blu-Ray and one DVD. The cost is $70. If they had to buy two at $40 the cost just went up to $80. Let's say they want 10 total - 5 DVDs and 5 Blu-Rays. The difference is $400 vs $350. It starts to add up.

If 4K restorations of Naked City, Beau Travail and Brute Force coupled to an almost never before released extended cut of Christ Stopped at Eboli doesn't make you feel alive, I don't know what can...

Besides, any month with a David Lynch title is worth the excitement alone.

I think one of the key reasons Criterion isn't jumping into UHD is the fact that DVDs are still pretty far from dying out, even with 2 generations of format upgrades. When DVDs started out, Laserdiscs stopped almost immediately (and even the VHS, which lasted all throughout the LD era, hit its final nail in the coffin only after DVDs). So with that kind of market history, I can't see Criterion stopping with putting out DVD versions anytime soon.

With that in mind, sustaining a still rather niche label with 3 different formats (plus the Channel) might not possible for Criterion, and I have a feeling that their finally starting with UHDs will come around pretty close to when they finally stop with DVDs (which still seems still kind of far off). But I'd love to be wrong, and the best thing that could happen this year is them announcing a UHD Wong Kar Wai Boxset, but it still seems like wishful thinking at this point.

The Arrow edition was pretty much a straight up port of Criterion's DVD master which the booklet mentioned as well. And while it doesn't look bad, this was one title literally screaming for a fresh 4K scan given just how amazing the cinematography is.

Using your example, if you want to buy 5 DVDs and 5 Blu-rays, with dual format you only need to buy 5. Wouldn't the total cost come out to $200, since 5 x $40 = $200?

I guess if your library does not need Blu-rays then dual format would cost more financially. But if your library carries both Blu-ray & DVD, dual format is a better deal.

Ummmm . . . no. If you buy 5 instead of 10 you no longer have the number needed to meet demand. You're suggesting that with dual format they only have to buy half as many copies. But if they do that unless they're not going to have a sufficient number of copies to meet demand.

You mean the 4K UHD I already own the Collector's Edition for? That's besides the point, I may not be re-buying it myself but for those who haven't gone UHD and for Criterion completionists, and for Region A folks in general, it is still pretty exciting. Even UK based non-UHD collectors would very likely opt for the Criterion due to the newer extras and/or simply because it is a Criterion release.

As much as I dislike what Polanski did and think he needed to be jailed, I can't deny that I really wish Knife in the Water got released. Really wish Criterion got to that one already.

Too bad Brute Force and The Naked City are coming out after the summer Criterion sale. Oh well, that's what Xmas time is for.

I think the only movie I'll be picking up during the upcoming one is Leave Her to Heaven, though I'm not really sure what Criterion has released these last two months.

There's an excellent region-free UK release if you want the film itself. There are a bunch of short films and multiple interviews with Polanski as extras, but you must be able to play SD-PAL content to access those.
