And yes, fans had been asking Criterion to release The Elephant Man since they started releasing blu-rays and it would've sold more copies, even without a 4K restoration because, at this point, people who have a UHD player will go for that instead.

It is only being released now because the restoration was done and available to license. It wouldn't surprise me if they released Crash now that a 4K release is available in region B territories.
It’s technically not the poster art though? It’s an optical zoom in of it (an SC used exactly the same proportions). Like apart from logos, it seems to be the same cover. To be fair it’s pretty neat taken by itself, so no complaints really, but I don’t remember the last time Criterion just decided to stick on pre-existing art (I’m pretty sure there must have been an instance or two, but I can’t recall any).

Lynch has complete control of these releases and I imagine that is the art he wanted for the releases.

Yeah, that seems most likely.

I'm definitely in for "World Cinema 3", "The Elephant Man", the two Dassins, and the Rosi.

This is shaping up to be a powerful month of September for Criterion fans!

Finally feels like a return back to "normal" when it comes to a solid list of announcements and excellent upgrades.

The two upgrades of the Jules Dassin film noirs are awesome, that's all I can say. I'm in for both, especially The Naked City.

The new blu-ray of the David Lynch film The Elephant Man is fabulous. It's a very sad film but one of the most humanistic films the director has ever made. I definitely am buying this one.

Martin Scorsese's 3rd World Cinema Box Set has got some interesting obscure films.

The Claire Denis movie Beau Travail is one I will check out.

Finally, the Rosi film Christ Stopped at Eboli looks amazing and I may just blind-buy this one.

Overall, one of the best months in a long time.

Absolutely nothing to complain about.

EDIT: I see that both of the Dassin titles are getting new scans, so forget everything I said I will be pre-ordering both. Besides the fact that I still want Never on Sunday on Blu

As I was saying a few days ago, there would be that one title that would get me to make a pre-order of the September titles and that one film is Brute Force. Haven't got the Region B BluRay of it yet, so I will be pre-ordering that. Already have the Arrow Region B version of The Naked City. The two Dassins are the only titles that caught my fancy, however as I said I have the one Region B film which means I won't be double dipping on it unless there is a massive improvement PQ and AQ with the Criterion version of The Naked City and I will be pre-ordering Brute Force. With Brute Force, the only Dassin title I want on BluRay is the elusive Never on Sunday.

Here is a review in French but it does have some screencaps and the review can easily be translated via Google Translate or your favorite translator. I've long been interested in this film since watching it like five years ago. It's a very worthy film adaption of Joan of Arc which I hope makes it way to the English-speaking countries sooner rather than later.

What a month! Particularly thrilled about the restored full cut of Rosi's Christ Stopped at Eboli making its way to stateside disc. Now how about the rest of his wonderful 1970s output?

Very intrigued by the WCP set and Christ Stopped at Eboli. It also gives me hope for them releasing Illustrious Corpses.

I jguess Criterion are now the home for Lynch releases on Region A
surely a 4K would have been very little work? StudioCanal are already loaning out their restoration, could they not have included the same 4K disc?

I'm so down for Lynch and Dassin titles.

And I don't mean to be greedy as the titles were just announced today, but what are the chances of Criterion getting Inland Empire now? To me that seems like the most likely Lynch film to get in the Collection.
Straight Story, I think is held firmly by Disney, sadly.

The only hitch is that Paramount distributes the film in the US and they don't licence out titles for UHD.

I’d be happy if Disney just released a Blu-ray of straight story themselves

You never know, maybe Criterion reaches out them and convinces then that they would move more units with them. It may not be probable but it’s not impossible. I know Anderson has some clause in his contract, but Rushmore, Tenenbaums, and Life Aquatic were pre-fox Merger Disney/touchstone owned titles, so they aren’t totally against licensing titles

Do you guys think if Criterion stuck with the dual-format release instead of giving up on that and going back to separate DVD and Blu-ray releases, would they be less apprehensive about jumping into the 4K physical media realm?

Like some others here I’m mainly interested in the the two Dassin titles and the Lynch film. The Naked City* and Brute Force were two of my top wish list upgrade titles and now I can move some others up. Knife in the Water, Missing and the Lean Dickens films come to mind.

*The Arrow edition is a nice upgrade but has some nagging scratches that I hope the new restoration will take care of.
