What is it with Sony lately? Stuff like this and Underworld get 4K finishes but Magnificent Seven, Inferno, Ghostbusters and Shallows are denied?

YES, before the pedants intervene I know I've said how good some of those look in UHD regardless and I stand by that 100%, but it's just plain weird that they'd finish the movies with far bigger budgets in 2K while the throwaway eurotrash franchise shit gets 4K. It's not like 3D is a factor here either.

Meh, Sony Pictures is in the dumps anyway, I guess they just don't really give a shit these days.

Could it be though that Resident Evil & Underworld are both shot on Red Dragon & Weapon, ie either native 6 or 8K, whereas Magnificent is film (and 2K no?), Inferno Alexa XT, same for Shallows, therefore no native 4K?

Does the thought process have to be that linear though? I don't mean you, but them. In the AC piece on Argo the cinematographer talked about the 4K finish not only giving them more of the look they wanted for the 35mm stuff but also improved the Alexa footage which even at 2.8K is still a considerable amount of extra pixels vs 2K, to say nothing of the 3.4K Open Gate mode which is all the rage these days. Sony uprezzed 2.8K Alexa on Skyfall for a full 4K finish (and by all accounts it was a spectacularly good-looking one) so it's not like they're strangers to doing so.

That's honestly the optimistic way to look at it. I'm more in the realm of thinking that smaller dramas and whatnot probably will never get a UHD release. If Sony didn't want to bother re-releasing Jerry Maguire on BD, and only did so when Cameron's team begged them to, and didn't release a UHD, what about that situation could change in 2-3 years? I'm pessimistic.

Wouldn't be surprised if they sold.

Otherwise, I don't know, just looking for possible reasons

In case new or some readers to this thread missed it - ISSUU…https://issuu.com/sonyprofessional/d...y_lynn_7_issuu

Or, if one prefers to listen to only a couple tidbits rather than read a long article, for Billy start at ~13:25 timestamp - http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/vid...eschanel-john-

for Silence and Passengers, timestamp ~ 21:27.
for the topic of post production and the DI, that starts at ~ 40:54

Now that principal photography (http://www.onlocationvacations.com/2...ilming-france/) has since wrapped, I’m hoping for some 4K DCP goodness with Dunkirk (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5013056/...ef_=tt_dt_spec)....

Then come this summer, for the inevitable forum discussions about the capture and post workflow for this movie, it would be sweet, rather than just text, if FotoKem or Chris N. provided enthusiasts a colorful flow chart from the camera(s) to the deliverables something like this .

Perhaps because those were all much more FX heavy?

What, and films like Underworld 17 and Passengers aren't? And I'm sure Magnificent 7 has got its fair share of VFX shots but it's hardly some 2000-shot VFX extravaganza, yet it getsa da 2K. Ghostbusters certainly isn't wall to wall to VFX and had a far bigger budget than Passengers did, yet it getsa da 2K.

Still, who can fathom what madness lies in the heads of Sony execs? We've all been trying to work that out for years.
