Netflix is almost in the same boat. Get this: I can get 4K on both my Roku and Sony, but I can only get 5.1 with the 4K on the Sony. Netflix on Roku is limited to stereo. Ridiculous!

Vudu has 34 4k movies all with DolbyVision

Technically, anyone with a roku 4. But regular 4k for me wasn't good enough to drop 30, would need to be hdr.

Definitely a small number of people. I went out of my way to buy a Roku 4 in order to have Vudu in UHD. Very few people will go to such lengths or even know that it's an option.

Anyone else ticked the Roku 4 Netflix app only offers stereo?

OTA might be different (like a decade from now) but like streaming, Cable and Satellite UHD will be crushed down to below BD quality making them a mute point resolution wise except for hype.

Because the FCC wants to sell more TV spectrum to Cell Phone companies, the FCC will have to accelerate the adoption of ATSC 3. Any UHD Blu-ray player that supports the Digital bridge that Sony proposals wanted to MANDATE, can support being a STB for ATSC 3 able to downscale for 1080P TVs. It would need a network to IPTV tuner as would every other 4K TV on the market till they are included internally. Fortunately there is a standard for that called Vidipath using Playready ND that is also in Sony proposals for the Digital bridge.

Microsoft mentions Game consoles using Playready ND (Vidipath DTCP-IP DRM for in home Streaming of 1080P and 4K) for Game consoles of DVR and Live content and both the XB1 and PS4 are listed in Official papers as UHD Capable and will be UHD blu-ray players after (Jan 2016 mentioned in a April 2015 paper) firmware update which might have been just UHD IPTV. UHD Capable is all that is mentioned but it includes all UHD media delivery schemes because they all use the same Open source delivery software stack. Only the DRM on Disk for Blu-ray differs (AACS 2 & BD+ which are slighty changed from what is in HD Blu-ray except for the requirement that they run in the same TEE the UHD media DRM requires.

The FCC is considering using STBs to accelerate the adoption if ATSC 3; you think someone has a plan?

HEVC being used for Antenna TV can support 4X as many channels at the same resolutions the TV stations are now using. In my area that is 34 X4 = 136 or I can imagine fewer more high resolution with Some having 4K programming for special events and dynamically reducing the resolution of the other sub channels.

I can't see where 4K media on Antenna TV ever becomes the primary viewing resolution which sorta agrees with some of your assumptions.

Took me a couple of days to have a dedicated 4K HDMI setup, readings manuals and several very helpful pms from my good friend Deciazulado. I am happy with the results and I am watching The Martian 4K now....Titan in 4K .

Sales of 4K Ultra HDTVs, UHD players and supporting 4K media saw strong sales over the first three months of 2016, according to preliminary data supplied Friday by the DEG: Digital Entertainment Group.

Ultra HDTV sets continued to show “dramatic” growth in the quarter, with unit sales shipments surpassing 1.5 million for the period... The DEG reported U.S. shipments of 4K Ultra HDTVs were up 210 percent for the period, bringing the total number of sets sold since the technology market launch to more than seven million units.

Hollywood studios have released 26 Ultra HD Blu-ray titles in the first quarter, and accounted for sales of “more than 80,000 discs in their first weeks of launch,” the DEG said. The group said sales of Ultra HD Blu-ray discs doubled the number of standard Blu-ray Discs sold during the first weeks of that format’s launch.

Hey, does anybody remember when people said UHD-BD would flop?

Link for this article?

Btw, I check Walmart often for good prices on 4k discs. As of last night, the revenant 4k was sold out. 1st time I've seen that for any of the 4k movies.

Maybe it's because those black cases look so bad ass

Yup, some good news there. Surprised at the numbers of discs sold too, that's a really good start.

Yeah sales are going to be higher than Blu-ray was in the beginning, just by virtue of being sold as a combo. That makes a huge difference.

Absolutely, and this time UHD TVs are way more popular than HDTVs was in 2006. I still had a standard CRT then.

The number are gonna be good for the U.S Market. Rest of the world I don't think so....

Here the price is doubled (or more) compared to the same movie on Blu-ray

There are not a lot of them, especially recent SFX heavy films. Too expensive and too slow to render at this point in time. Catalog titles, for the time being, may give you the added detail with all the extra goodies.
