Yes, but would you loan to them, or perhaps, loan to them either?

I do not loan out my BDs. People do not respect other people's property.

Even when you're lucky enough to actually get s**t back, it's usually been disrespected in some way. It's been dropped, spilled on, carelessly handled, etc.

My VHS and DVDs (and some videogames) took enough abuse. I no longer loan out anything I even remotely care about.

None of our friends use blu ray, honestly. Even when I try to give away DVD copies most of them have no interest. They don't want to own physical media anymore, if they ever did.

This thread has 55 pages....how did I never see it?! Great question.

I have one friend in particular who always liked to borrow my DVDs back in the day. He's a clumsy dude who had the best of intentions, but accidents always happen with him. One time he borrowed my Battle Royale DVD which was hard to come by at the time. He broke in somehow (cracked near the inner hole) and it wouldn't play after that. He felt bad and told me he'd buy me a new one, but for years it was very pricey on Amazon so I just told him to hold off. Then the 'Battle Royale Complete Collection' blu set came out at a very reasonable price years later and he surprised me with that. That made up for it! But because of that, I really don't lend out discs. Thankfully most of my friends don't ask.

I will loan things out with strict conditions. First I will only loan to people I trust will treat them right. My best friend knows how OCD I am so she would treat them appropriately. If it's a steelbook/digibook/import theres not a chance in hell they're getting it. DVDs I lend out a lot, but my policy is if you lose/break it you have to get me the blu-ray version. So all in all I lend easily replaceable movies out with the warning that if you break it, you buy it.

My friends have never asked me, but if they did I would probably go watch the movies with them and then leave with my BDs.

I've had too many bad experiences loaning out video games and DVDs. Learned my lesson and won't loan out any blurays. I've let my relatives borrow a few and they always come back with scratches...

Most people I know do not even own a blu ray player or have a PS3. So thankfully there are few requests. But I'll admit blu rays are reasonably good in my experience at resisting casual wear and tear. I've even checked out a lot of library copies that looked scratch-free. But they're definitely not a guarantee to be free of marks because I have several that certainly look a lot worse than they play. The best compromise is usually to just loan out the dvd from combo packs since both most people have a dvd player and the worry of a lost or damaged blu is a non-issue.

Only two of my friends own a Blu-ray player and I trust them completely so they can borrow whatever they want but the only rule I have is that it comes back to me within a couple days. If they're going to borrow something, they're not sitting on them. They have two days tops to watch it.

Yes, to a select few who would treat the Blu-rays like I would treat them.

I do on occasion. Has anyone ever had one returned in bad shape? Only one I ever had returned in bad shape was a dvd to my brother but he bought me a new version to replace it since he scratched it up so bad (was driving long-haul truck at the time). Otherwise, they are usually good.

That's the thing. I don't know many people that are into Blu-ray. Two of cousins own a PS3 and they only use it for games and never used it once for Blu-ray. Not sure why people would buy a PS3 (or PS4) and not want to take advantage of its great Blu-ray capability, but whatever.

As for DVDs, I've loaned a few to a couple of "friends" in the past and I got them back three months later and in messed up condition. Since then, I vow to never lend movies, unless it's a movie I don't care about anymore. If you want to watch one of my films, have a seat in my living room and I'll gladly play the movie for you.

We're in the same boat
My relatives and friends used to borrow DVDs but they stopped after I shifted to BDs. I don't think they appreciate the blu-ray movies' marked improvement in picture and sound quality much as I do since I'm the only one among them whose hobby is collecting movies; besides I am the only one who owns a dedicated home theater room. Whenever there is a special occasion like a family reunion, I bring some of my gears and BDs with me so we can watch the movies together.

Thumbs down

Absolutely not.

And the same goes for DVDs, CDs, books and magazines.

I had two or three times when things never came back to have me enforce a "hell no!" policy if I am every asked by a friend if they can borrow something from my collection.

Not budging on this one.
