Arrow Boyhood (2014) (Paramount + Criterion Releases)

Update #1

In mid-July 2014, Richard Linklater confirmed that his twelve-year-long project, Boyhood, would be released on home video via distribution from The Criterion Collection. The full interview that confirms this can be found here.

Quote:
Q: The Criterion Collection has worked with you before putting together special editions of your films. Is there a Criterion edition of Boyhood coming in the future and if so, can you talk about some of the special features we might see on the release?

Linklater: Yeah, we’ve got a ton of behind the scenes stuff. We made this in the era where everyone has a digital camera so we unearthed an interview from year one with Ellar, Lorelai, Patricia and myself, Patricia interviewed me in 2002. I hadn’t seen this since we shot it, Ellar had forgotten quite a bit of it but he got to see himself as a wide-eyed six year old. For people who like the movie, I think there will be a lot of cool little treasures.
Update #2

In late August 2014, new information surfaced from the movie website, Rope of Silicon, that confirmed the home video release of Boyhood as coming exclusively from Paramount Pictures. The full article that confirms this can be found here.

Quote:
UPDATE: I have reached out to Paramount and confirmed there will not be a collaboration with Criterion for the release of Richard Linklater's Boyhood on Blu-ray and DVD. I was told, "This will be a Paramount only home release. We will not collaborate with Criterion."
Update #3

Several days after the Rope of Silicon article was published, a forum member belonging to the movie website, CriterionForum, e-mailed Richard Linklater's production company, Detour Films, directly for more information regarding the home video release and distribution of the film. The forum member's original inquiry, as well as the response he received, can be found here.

Quote:
Paramount is handling the initial DVD/bluray release for Boyhood. The Criterion release will come later. It is not yet being produced and the release date is unknown.
General Comments

As new information continues to surface, I will update this thread accordingly.

As of right now, the initial home video release of Boyhood will be distributed exclusively from Paramount Pictures and will more or less be released around the fourth quarter of 2014. A special edition of the film, distributed exclusively from The Criterion Collection, will follow at a later date.

Boyhood is a one-of-a-kind, game-changing film and regardless of which studios puts out the film on home video, it should be experienced by everybody. For now, you can pre-order the film from Amazon via the following link.

I haven't even seen this film yet, but I'm willing to bet i'll love it. Not since The Social Network have I seen a film get such universal acclaim on RT. Not only does it have a high tomato meter, but the rating is really high too. Really glad criterion's doing the release.

I figured that would happen. Criterion has a deal with IFC Films and has done Linklater films in the past. Hope this brilliant film gets a great release filled with bonus material. It's just a shame Criterion hasn't been able to get his other masterpiece, the Before series, from the multiple rights holders

The way I read his answer was that he has a ton of Behind The Scenes stuff from the production not that CC is releasing the film, unless it's in the link that I didn't read

I truly hope so, but Warner Bros. owns the rights to the first two films, and Sony the third. Therefore, it doesn't look too good.

I can't wait to see this movie. It may be my most anticipated film of the year.

More from the interview:

Quote:
Q: Have they talked to you about when they want to release it?

Linklater: I don’t know yet but it will be cool.

Q: I think the last time you were here you were wearing a Criterion shirt.

Linklater: (laughs) Was I?

Q: Yes.

Linklater: The New Yorker just did a profile on me and I just happened to have that Criterion shirt on. I thought I would change the shirt but they liked it so I kept it on. So then I told Peter Becker, the head of Criterion, hey I got my Criterion shirt in the New Yorker. Give me that Jacques Demy boxset. He told me it’s on its way. (laughs)

Q: Have you been to the Criterion office to put together the Blu-Ray yet?

Linklater: Not yet.

Pre-ordered it but Amazon says its Blu-Ray - DVD - Digital Copy, doesn't mention the Criterion Collection at all...

EDIT: It also says its a 3 disc edition released by Paramount.

Yeah this film was just wonderful. Sure the construction is interesting but it's really the characters (adult and child) and how each one evolves in relation to one another that is truly great storytelling.

I'll pick this up day one. I wonder too about that cover that doesn't look like something criterion would do. I kind of hope they would make the artwork and box match the style of dazed and confused and slacker

I'm guessing that this version is being released first to make it more available for consumers and the Criterion will follow.

I see four options:

1. We were punk'd, and this Paramount release is all we're getting.
2. We're being punk'd, and this Paramount release is just a joke (or mistake).
3. Boyhood is getting the "Benjamin Button treatment", a comprehensive blu-ray jointly released by Paramount and Criterion.
4. Boyhood is getting the "Fantastic Mr. Fox treatment", and will be released on Criterion further down the line (how long, we can only hope to find out soon).
