I had to have it now. IMO, this is a great film. The vistas in the first part of the story are majestic. The unfolding emotional drama is captivating, The acting is superb. For me it is a movie that makes me say, "wow."

I shed a tear at the end of the movie every time I see it (okay, I admit it: sometimes its a gusher). I said it before and I will say it again: this is NOT a gay movie.

You are correct. There are a couple scenes that cause emotions to stir. A classic movie that will remain that way for along while.

Very solid review. I agree with the assessment that this film (while it may spark political/moral/religious discussions) is at heart simply a love story. One of my co-workers said she loved the film because it was a touching love story between two adults, plain and simple. We are all, at this point, accustomed to star-crossed lover storylines where two people who are in love face societal constraints/judgments, and this film delivers beautifully, in my opinion.

I remember the year it was in the running for all the Academy Awards--it was up against films like Crash, Capote, and Good Night and Good Luck--all excellent films in my opinion.

I'm looking forward to watching this one again once it arrives in the mail! I imagine the western vistas look beautiful in Blu Ray HD glory.

Okay guys and gals, I just finished watching Brokeback Mountain on BD. Though an improvement over the oldray DVD, I found the PQ to be a tad soft most of the time (some scenes are very crisp, primarily close-ups). Aside from that, it was stellar. The vistas surrounding Brokeback Mountain are exquisite. There was one thunderstorm that rocked the walls when my subwoofer suddenly erupted.

I do have one serious question regarding the movie:

[Show spoiler]At the end, when Innis Del Mar opens his closet door and there we see Jack Twist's jacket over which Innis has placed his shirt (very symbolic - as moments before, we see Jack's jacket wrapped over Innis's shirt).

Innis, with tears in his eyes, utters the last three words in the movie:

"Jack... I swear."

In this profound statement I can find no meaning. Can someone please explain what Innis means? It really leaves me hanging to not understand the message of this powerful moment.

I hope someone out there can resolve this for me. Thank you.

I think he was remembering all the times Jack Twist drove him crazy just by being Jack Twist but don't quote me on that.

I think you right. It's one of those things you say when you are reminiscing about past times, etc. All the good, bad or what not. It's what you say when you love, miss, have a tight friendship with someone. It's like a sigh of stupidity for them, but in a playful silly way.

Not sure that made sense but I tried

I think the line might be promise from Ennis to Jack that he would be unafraid to be with him if he had it to do over again and that he will be joining him one day in whatever realm their souls might meet again.

I remember that scene, I was thinking about this BR yesterday at WM, but decided on another.
Think I will go back today and get for my collection.

Hello Ben,

I believe you hit the nail on the head with your assessment. I kept thinking back to scenes in the film in an effort to recall in incident in which Jack might have asked Innis to swear to something, but it was not to be.

I will watch some of the extra features on the BD tonight to see if there is some discussion about that closing line (it might be embedded in the commentary).

Thank you, Ben.

Ben:

I just want to say that your review was wonderful. I really enjoyed reading it.

(one of my favorite moments was with the shirts--Ennis reversing the order of the shirts so that his now enfolds Jack's.)
