ok so I have a question and am hoping I can get some opinions--
seems like the only blu rays I've had issues with are early Lionsgate titles-- House of 1000 Corpses died on me and I replaced it with the double feature disc of that with Devil's Rejects. Now my Punisher blu ray is dead as well-- These early titles are still available to buy at this time--- while I realize the transfer and PQ quality will be the same, would the pressings be better now? In other words, if I buy THE PUNISHER again would it be less likely to go bad or would it be the same situation? |

Looked at this thread the other day and noticed that Bigger than Life is on there as a potential defective title. I got my Bigger than Life blu-ray out and noticed that indeed it has yellowing/bronzing around the inner part of the disc. I put the disc in and it ran the whole movie and it played fine. I looked at a number of other Criterion discs I have and this was the only one that had that yellowing/bronzing going on.

Yeah, well I never looked at that particular disc until yesterday, and the only miscoloration was in near the inner part of the disc, not where the actual data is. So will the whole disc eventually get weird and discolored and unplayable?

Actually it was only for a certain time period not everything, and then only from a single manufacturer. The earliest Criterion blu-rays should be fine. The potentially bad ones have been pretty well enumerated by this point, in this thread.

More typically the bronzing that's been problematic seems to be the variety that starts around the outer edge of the disc. There's numerous pictures of such in this thread. The key at this point seems to be who the manufacturer of the disc was as to whether such discoloration is even a possibility. (All of mine were bought early on and most or all of them were indeed from that manufacturer.) Only two of mine didn't actually play, but I haven't played them all yet. |

Still have several to go through, but nothing so far. You all might want to check your Summer Hours replacement discs to make sure they're okay... |

Why would the replacement discs be bad? They were made by Criterion's current replicator and are therefore as good as any off-the-shelf Criterion BD released today.

If your disc is bronzing I would just send it in immediately. Do you really want to check it again every couple of years or so? Or start watching it and have it freeze? I think once the discoloration starts it's very very likely the bd will eventually fail.
