yeah, they really dropped the ball here. only replacing a few discs and ignoring the rest is REALLY low

Is the replacement disc for the "bronzed" Pierrot Le Fou blu-ray ULTRA copy protected or something? Because AnyDVD won't read it but will read every other Criterion blu I have. It's no biggie, since my laptop is set to region A anyway and reads the disc just fine without needing to resort to AnyDVD, but the program won't process it, and ImgBurn gives me a message saying the disc is copy protected, but it burns other Criterion blus just fine. Just curious.

The people at Sly Soft, the company which owns AnyDVD insist this means the disc is defective, regardless of whether it plays fine or not, but I sincerely doubt it's defective, since ImgBurn gave me a "copy protected" message when I tried to rip it, and it doesn't do this for any other Criterion blu-ray I have. So is it possible the replacements had an extra protection placed on them, since it's an OOP title?

Perhaps just a newer AACS key that AnyDVD hasn't been updated to handle yet?

Perhaps, and that possibility makes me feel better, although AnyDVD processes my Walkabout replacement disc just fine. Maybe the latter was merely taken from a stash of already pressed post-Sonopress discs.

Yeah, it seems possible to me. I'm not sure exactly what error message you received, but I've definitely had AnyDVD fail on new/new-ish BDs and require a newer version of AnyDVD.

Luckily, the AACS encryption doesn't interfere with the hardware readability of the disc (the way CSS does for DVDs), so you can use Nero CD-DVD Speed or that other piece of software people were using to make sure the disc scans 100%.

You really had 11 bad discs just from Well Go? Or did you send them all 11 discs that "might" have been effected? Did you also have more from Criterion?

Maybe that's the problem, bunch of people freaked out based on this thread and they got HUNDREDS or even thousands of discs sent to them. Not many companies are going to be set up to turn around hundreds of random discs (usually a recall or replacement program is for ONE specific disc or movie - so having more movies effected is going to dramatically increase their processing time).

I just find it amazing that I haven't found a single bad disc yet. Although this concern prompted me to re-watch every single one of these films in full (including the extras) I never found an issue with any of the ones reported on here. Of course only a few of them had the codes from the bad facilities, but even those still worked. I'm not even going to send them in unless/until they actually go bad - by then hopefully the backlog is cleared and the process is much faster.

all 11 were very OBVIOUSLY bronzed to hell.

I have 8 bad ones from Criterion (only one of that they've addressed in their damn press release), and several others that have the same IFPI code from criterion but don't seem to be bad yet

Another potentially problematic disc from Universal is Ray. While it used to play with no issue, it now hangs while trying to load the menu on my PS3; the player recognizes the disc and will play the pre-menu trailers, it just can't access the main menu or the feature itself. The disc will play on my computer, so I suspect the problem may be limited to specific players including the PS3.

Anyone else having issues with Ray?

Yep, that's what it was. I had to update to the newest version of AnyDVD, needing to renew my license in the process. Now it successfully processes the disc.

So did everyone who sen't the Criterion discs that were on the official list got replacement? or are people still waiting for those?

I will finally be sending Summer Hours and Stagecoach together, i know one is not on the list but i am not sure if waiting longer would help since there hasn't been any sort of news, not even e-mail answers from Criterion.

I sent in a copy of Summer Hours about two weeks ago and received the replacement copy today.

Received DAYS OF HEAVEN last week which completes the replacement process of the five I sent in. I have at least two more from the OP that are listed as questionable, but so far there is not enough info posted to see if I should send them in or not. Have people stopped posting here about other potentially affected Criterion titles or are the reports on some of them just not yet conclusive enough?

Criterion has not expanded their initial list. People who sent discs that aren't on Criterion's list are still waiting to hear back from Criterion.

I'll certainly check my M, Monsoon Wedding and Days of heaven when I get home tonight.
This thread has made me super paranoid about the fact that my film storage bookshelf is located directly in front of a heater in my bedroom. There's really no way to reconfigure the room to get around it.

...it scares me.

In checking YOUR list as opposed to the official list, JScoggins, the only two I need confirmation-or at least more information on-are LOLA MONTES and REPULSION. The rest I either sent in and have already gotten replacements for or I don't own.

I hope more research is done and more results forthcoming from both disc owners and Criterion themselves. Like Wormraper posted above, Criterion's apparent disingenuous handling of some of this has been frustrating.

I just bought copies of Ip Man 1,2 & Legend of the Fist from Well Go USA now im gonna have to keep an eye on them. Im glad I found this thread.

Update: I just checked all 3 discs, which all came from the same big order I placed from an online store & all 3 discs have the bronzing with IP Man 1 being the worse. Can someone whos sent in a disc to Well Go let me know about how long itll take to get the replacements in?
