The epic fail that was Vince Young's NFL career is officially over. He finessed his career with 46 TD, 51 picks and a 74 QB rating. Major bust for a #3 overall pick.

Quote:
Quarterback Vince Young, who hasn't played in the NFL since 2011, announced his retirement Saturday.

"I'm retired," Young told KXAN in Austin, Texas. "Unless we get a great opportunity, something guaranteed ... I've already started moving forward. ... It's definitely official, I think, in my book."

Young, who didn't play in the NFL this past season after being cut by the Green Bay Packers in the preseason, participated in the Browns' three-day minicamp before signing with the team May 1. The team signed veteran quarterback Tyler Thigpen on the same day and released the 31-year-old four days after drafting Johnny Manziel.

The No. 3 overall pick in 2006 by the Tennessee Titans, Young earned Rookie of the Year honors and made the Pro Bowl in 2006 and 2009 while starting for the Titans. He was released in 2011 after a falling out with coach Jeff Fisher.

In parts of six seasons with the Titans and Eagles, Young threw for 8,964 yards and 46 touchdowns.

Despite a rookie deal with the Titans that guaranteed $25.7 million, financial issues had plagued Young in recent years. In February, he reached a settlement with creditors a month after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

It looks like the 49ers shouldn't expect to see Vernon Davis showing up to minicamp and it will be interesting to see if he extends his holdout into training camp:

Quote:
In 2010 I signed a five-year, $37 million contract extension with $23 million guaranteed. It was the biggest contract for a tight end in league history. Four years later, and I’m playing at a higher level than I was then, which brings me to why I’m holding out. It’s all about getting paid what you deserve. It’s not that complicated. I want the 49ers to win the Super Bowl, and I want to be on the field this summer working toward that goal, but I have to worry about my future first.

The 49ers aren't the only NFC West team with an unhappy player. Marshawn Lynch reportedly wants a new deal and is supposedly considering retirement if he doesn't get one. Considering he's 28 and is signed for 2 more seasons it would seem foolish to give Lynch a new deal, especially when he's got the 5th-highest paid running back in the league. It's hard to know how serious Lynch is since he doesn't talk to the media.

Well... guess there's always room for one more name on the jersey.

I agree with him [umd fan or not ] he played out that contract and if he blows his acl out in week 8 in the last year of this contract he will have damaged his value... They cut people at will he should get a similar or improved deal expanding on the one he has.

Jags sign newly drafted QB Blake Bortles to a 4 year $20.6 million deal. They tend to make him start for the 2015 season. We'll see how that goes as we can throw him under the bus like we did with Gabbert during his 1st year

The thing is Davis is still among the highest-paid tight ends in the league. The only tight ends that make more than him are Gronk and Jason Witten, and Witten's deal is only worth $250,000 more than Davis over the life of the contract. In addition Gronk's contract is so backloaded that there's a good chance he'll make less than Davis. Gronk is only set to earn $17 million over the first 4 years of his deal, and then he is due a $8 million option bonus that is fully unguaranteed. Compare that to Davis who made $28 million over the first 4 years of his deal, and it's pretty clear that Davis' deal is superior to Gronk's as Gronk's deal doesn't pay out the big money until the back of his deal and there's a good chance he'll never see that money. I don't see how Davis can consider himself underpaid when he is virtually tied as the highest-paid player at his position.

The 49ers also don't have a lot of money to give out with Kaep on a new deal and Michael Crabtree, Frank Gore, and Mike Iupati all hitting free agency next year. I would be very surprised if the 49ers gave Davis a new deal. Maybe they'll do some kind of band aid deal where they add a few years to his current deal and give him a signing bonus and some additional guaranteed money, but they won't give him the massive extension he thinks he deserves when he doesn't hit free agency until he's 32.

Not surprising at all. A sports franchise is going to have a hard time hanging on to a name that's well established to be a slur. It's inevitable that Washington will have to change it's name. Just depends on how long Snyder holds out.

The patent office has already said the Redskins trademark will still be protected during appeals, so it will likely be a couple years minimum until today's ruling matters. Last time the Redskins lost the trademark it took 4 years for the appeal, and it could easily last that long again.

The problem isn't the name its that people have nothing better to do then worry about the football team.

I mean if people are going to whine about the Redskins name. Why don't they make as big a deal with The Braves, Indians and Blackhawks?

Are you serious? Because "Redskin" is an overt racial slur. It always has been. The others are not slurs. The term Redskins isn't far off from calling a team the Washington Negros. Only difference is it's more socially acceptable in this country to slur Native Americans than African Americans.

In fact the Blackhawks were named after a WWI infantry division which was named after a famous Native American warrior. That name absolutely is not disparaging.

A Brave is simply a name that was used for Native American warrior. Also not disparaging.

Yeah, Braves and Indians have gotten past criticism for negative portrayals of Native Americans through mascots, but both teams have long since retired those items.
