I would say the greatness of McNabb is debatable, it's amusing how many Vikings fans thought he was the problem this year when the truth is that team just doesn't have a lot of talent.

I had been meaning to write this story for quite some time, but it wasn’t until this morning when I linked to a post about Daniel Snyder that I was reminded to share it. I’m finishing up John Feinstein’s book, Next Man Up, which is a behind the scenes account of the 2004 Baltimore Ravens. That season, Mike Nolan was the defensive coordinator with Baltimore, his last year with the team prior to accepting a head coaching position with the 49ers. Well, Nolan shared a story from his days with the Redskins. Apparently he and owner Daniel Snyder did not get along.

Early that season, after a Redskins loss, Snyder told Nolan that his defensive calls were “too vanilla.” Like the other coaches, Nolan had figured out by then that trying to explain football to Snyder was pointless, since he already had the game figured out. A few days later a gallon of 31 Flavors ice cream showed up on Nolan’s desk with a note that said, “This is what I like. Not vanilla.”

Nolan laughed and sent Snyder a note: “Thanks for the ice cream. My kids enjoyed it.”

“The first time it was actually kind of funny,” Nolan said. “I didn’t mind it at all.”

The next time wasn’t as funny.

The Redskins lost on the road to Dallas, and Nolan went into his office late Sunday night to start looking at game tape. When he arrived, there were three giant canisters of melting 31 Flavors ice cream on his desk with another note: “I wasn’t joking. I do not like vanilla.”

Feinstein had the story confirmed by other sources around the league. How great is that one? Leave it to Snyder to take a fun figure of speech and turn it into literal meaning. If anyone wants to find out why the Redskins suck so much, you don’t have to look any further than the top. Now, whenever the Niners and Redskins meet, you know whose side to wager on.

The mere fact that McNabb gets HOF discussion (though unwarranted in my opinion) tells you he was a great QB worthy of the franchise QB moniker.

Ah those guys are all before I started watching football regularly. Jurgenson was good all right, I had simply forgotten him. Odd with all of those QBs they didn't win more Super Bowls, although I guess that just proves that it takes more than a good or elite QB to get it done.

John Parr, who had a #1 hit in the 80s with his song St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion), has released a new version of the song. It is simply the greatest song of all time.

What a fail by the Jags hiring Mularkey, he failed as an Offensive coordinator in Atlanta with a stud QB, 2 stud WR, a stud TE and a stud RB, yet he gets a job to be a head coach for Jags? How does that work .. Who only have a stud RB in MJD... Sure reg season numbers were decent, when you have great players like that, but what a bust in the playoffs... the Jags have almost no one on offense.... Great hire

What a disappointment Raiders coach firings are these days. At the very least we use to get the crypt keeper coming out of hibernation every year or two to give an hour-plus long presser complete with overhead slide projector and endless wild accusations hurled at his former coaches. The younger Davis apparently is just as oppressive towards his coaches but works more behind closed doors. Major bummer.

Sure thats understandable, but there are many more up and coming coaches in the NFL, why not give a new face a chance? Lets just give the job to someone who's already failed in the NFL?

Maybe he'll be the opposite of Wade Phillips. Wade was a lousy Head Coach but is a Great "D" co-ordinator.....
[Show spoiler]probably not

Major Bummer for sure. Al was a maverick in this league but his final years were . He would verbally crucify his Head Coaches (publicly), and not give a rat's ass. His pressers used to be entertaining but Raider fans must have been wondering WTF is going on here. Now junior is doing the same thing, only it's not entertaining anymore.

I agree. If I were a fan of a team hiring a new coach I'd much rather have a younger assistant with something to prove like the Packers Winston Moss (who is the frontrunner for the Raiders job) rather than a retread. It's like the current coaching search in Tampa. They're interviewing Marty Schottenheimer, who is 68 and hasn't coached in the NFL since 2006, Brad Childress, who was fired after the 2010 season by the Vikings and was hated almost his entire tenure by the fans, Mike Sherman, who was fired by the Packers in 2006 and fired by Texas A&M after last season, and Wade Phillips, who has been a head coach 4 times (in addition to a stint as an interim coach) and won a grand total of 1 playoff game. Phillips has done a great job as the Texans coordinator but he is not head coaching material.

I can't find the article this second, but from what I read yesterday its kind of a sad story, Mark Davis has been around the team and I guess everyone from coaches to front office has seen his dad abuse the sh* out of him. I think one of the quotes was like Al says what do we need to draft? Mark Davis responds like "A WR?" and Al goes "No you F* D*A$$, get the F* out of the room" and just constantly belittling and berating him. Now that he's the boss and almost everyone there has seen that he's got to show he's the boss and Jackson was just a casualty of that.

After reading that article I don't blame Mark Davis as much as I would have, had this been an Al Davis move.

Just look @ what Mike McCarthy has done w/the Packers!!! A relative unknown brought in and has improved w/every season as a coach and won a super bowl.

Unless u get a guy like Bill Cowher…someone who is gonna kick all forms of ass as a coach, these teams just shouldn’t be looking @ guys that have already had a chance and failed…..and in the cases of some, failed multiple times.
