The above are just my opinion.
Correction. HDR10+ was designed for 500 nit or lower TVs. You won't really notice a difference between HDR10 and HDR10+ on a 700 nit OLED.

I see the latest firmware has added the system gamma control to the 820.

I had thought the on the 820 SDR BT2020 tone mapped to 350 nits. Now I'm reading that the ub9000 has the two projector modes (basic and high) and that the ub 820 only has a 500 nit mapping? Did something change from Kris Deering's original findings that the 820 set to output SDR BT2020 with the optimizer on was mapping to 350 nits?

Correct, only the UB9000 has 2 projector tone mapping modes, 350 Nits and 500 Nits.

The UB820 only has the 500 Nit HDR Optomizer mode.

Did the patch make it so the player does not shutdown at 10 minutes anymore? Was there a setting they put it to change what time it shuts off now? If so i cannot find it. Or did the patch just cancel it so it goes off when you shut the player off.

So those modes are for outputting hdr. If using sdr bt2020, does the 820 still map to 350 nits with the optimizer on as Kris had originally stated?

Sony clips the least IIRC, Panasonic and Pioneer are near identical to my eyes.

I don't remember Kris saying the UB820 tone maps to 350 Nits when using SDR BT2020.

From what I know the UB820 cannot tone map to 350 Nits. Only the UB9000 has 350 Nits and 500 Nits tone mapping available.

Kris posts here frequently so let's see what he says.

Robert, the 500 nits on 820 and 350/500 on the 9000 info came from Panasonic/JVC training earlier this year.

I worked with Panasonic HQ in the development and Beta testing of the UB820 and UB9000.

Keep in mind I'm referencing sdr bt2020 not hdr. Kris had posted that the default position on the dynamic range control was 350 nits and all the way up to +12 was 100 nits.

Then somebody must get both Dolby and Panasonic in a room and hash out why their implementation of Dolby Vision is clipping and then correct the issue.

I still can't understand why a UB820 and or UB9000 owner would bypass the well respected HDR Optomizer and use Dolby Vision HDR?

Dolby Vision HDR content played in HDR10 with Panasonic piority HDR Optomizer delivers a better pictures that Dolby Vision HDR can even if the cliping was fixed.

That's still no excuse. You have a feature? Make sure it works.

Thanks and I understand and apreciate yoru position. All I am doing in my post above and this one is to bring to the attention of all UB820 and UB9000 owners the best way to operate these advanced technology BD players.

The answer I provided is helpful to all UB820 and UB9000 owners and that's what user forums are all about, solutions to delievr the best possible performance from our love for premium a/v experences.

Two things to consider:

1. It seems to be an issue for Dolby to work out. Clipping highlights when playing Dolby Vision HDR is a common problem with BD players.

2. Sorry to repea, but why would anyone want to use Dolby Vision HDR when the Panasonic's superior HDR Optomizer would deliver a better picture.

Try answering item #2 above without bring into the reply with DV should work if it's also included in the BD player.

Panasonic and Sony both know about the Dolby Vision HDR clipping and they are working with Dolby for a fix.
