While I have you, could you give me your input on an OLED LG?

Will it make this situation better, worse, or same?

Also-- will my blu rays (not 4k) look better or will I notice 2k limitations more?

Lastly-- will the majority of my 4k discs look better?

thanks again for helping
Some people just don't 'see' these clipped black issues regardless of display type while they stand out like a sore thumb to me, whether their settings are incorrect - I can assure you that mine are correct - or the display type OLED/PJ/LCD is covering it up/making it worse I don't know.

But this problem is inherent to how these 4K UHDs of these movies have been mastered. Black Panther on UHD is another, Toy Story 3 on UHD is another. The black levels have been crudely clipped and so instead of having this smooth roll off into black there's all this odd colour tinting instead.

Examples here of Skyfall in another thread, these are caps taken directly from the disc so the problems are in the UHD, not the display itself: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...4#post19401884

I should think all your discs will look betterer on the OLED than on the Samsung, you just can't do anything about the ones with this shitty black crush.

When you play the movie - have you tried changing the audio track (to one of the lossy "dolby digital 5.1", even a foreign language just to check. USB audio is capped at lossy, so could be your receiver having trouble with the lossless track on the 4k disc

Just bizarre.
I’m going to send them an email and ask what players/TVs they used for QA. It’s possible they did test on a LG OLED and a player using Player-Led DV. It’s also possible other OLEDs are not impacted by this issue. At least the BU releases look great in HDR10

Yes I tried that but nothing, I have been trying different blu rays and i seem to have the issue only with the dark knight trilogy, which is weird because i've had them since release and i never had that issue with them, i tried wiping the disc but nothing works, the audio also doesn't work with the regular blu rays of the dark knight trilogy either.

Have you disabled secondary audio?

It seems the Dolby Vision flicker issue on Shout discs aren't just isolated to LG TVs. I'm having the same issues with my Panasonic UB820 and Toshiba 4K smart TV. It's incredibly frustrating considering I upgraded my player in anticipation of watching Shout's new Halloween releases and I have yet to find a solution for it.

I tried it but it didn't work so i basically tried switching through all the audio tracks again and now every audio track works except for English, this is weird...

ok so i fixed the issue, it had to do with my tv settings under audio, audio works now!

I paid $350 + tax for my UB820 last week over Best Buy. I got 10% discount because my birthday is this month and also had $100 in rewards. If you are Elite Plus member you get 10% discount on eligible items during your birthday month. Only one item, though

I just popped in Halloween 4 on my Z9D with the 820 and didn't notice anything out of the ordinary. I think this may be the case where using TV-led DV on these discs is causing issues for some people.

No issues with any of the Halloween (Shout) discs on my 9000.

Could you share your picture settings? Searching through various threads I’ve found a good mix of LG OLED owners reporting the flicker went away and that it did not. Seems to impact models from 2018 to 2021

Have you checked your 820 for a firmware update? It fixed the flicker for some people. For me it resolved the flicker with Ghost in the Shell but no difference with the Halloween movies.

Best Buy has the 420 for $150 in case anyone was waiting and doesn’t want/need DV.

Yes, I updated the firmware as soon as I unpacked the player and got it hooked up to my TV, but unfortunately that did not solve the problem for me. I also tried changing the DV picture settings on my TV, the dynamic range settings in the menu of the player, and bought a new HDMI cord that I knew had the bandwidth requirements for DV but nothing seemed to get rid of the flicker/brightness fluctuations. It's a strange issue since it doesn't seem to behave the same way on my other (and slightly older) UHDs with DV. I'm stumped on what to try next.

I think that's one of the many reasons as to why we champion test patterns and benchmark discs. Put something on your display that you know is right to see if you have a problem. Don't trust movies for black levels, gradations or whatnot.

I spent countless hours helping a member, who asks "Is the right? Is this wrong?" and I don't think they used a test pattern once to give me feedback.

Could you please share your TV model number and settings? Also note that this isn't so much of a flicker as a brightness fluctuation many times happening from shot to shot. I didn't notice it until watching part 4. Once I did it was game over and it became so distracting I had to turn off DV.

Thank you.

Default Response from Shout Factory (Halloween Discs DV Issue)

I got a response from Shout Factory regarding the brightness fluctuation with DV. They told me I'm the first person to report this issue on the Halloween discs. Everyone having an issue should email them at info@shoutfactory.com
