I currently have the standard set up with the Panasonic and cable going into the receiver and from there to the TV.

My question is--- can I leave everything the way it is but also run a HDMI cable from the player directly to the TV so that I bypass the video 4k signal from the receiver and have it going directly to a TV input? I'm hoping this action would take care of the video imperfections...

I would still have the audio coming directly from the receiver as well as video/audio from my cable box.

or................ can I just run audio out from the 820 to the receiver and video directly to the TV??

Please help!
If your TV and receiver have eARC (the "e" is very important here) you can run a single HDMI cable to the tv and the audio signal will pass through the HDMI cable plugged into the OUTPUT on your receiver.

The other option would be to use two HDMI cables, one for audio that goes from the 820 to the receiver, and the other for video that goes from the 820 to the TV. You should notice your player has two HDMI outs, with one being labeled "Audio Out"...

This feature was originally designed to combat hdcp 2.2 requirements that prevented receivers from sending a signal unless they were compliant, so it will do exactly what you're asking: enable you to send video to your tv and audio to your receiver.

It's not... Unfortunately. DV issues still persist, unless it's our OLEDs causing the problem.

Out of curiosity, what kind of TV are you using? Also what model Sony player do you have? I have a buddy with a CX who claims he's having no issues, so I'm trying to figure out why.

I also have a C9... Hmm... Curious as to what Sony player he tried. Either way I can't imagine it's the TV since every disc with DV doesn't act up like this.

Why even mess around with it? Receivers aren’t subject to the 90 day return policy at Costco - so you can return it whenever. They have the new Denon s760 online for $449.

Could the brightness fluctuations be linked to ABSL/ABL? I have problems with that on my LG C9 when watching DV content on streaming apps but not really on my Panny 820.

May I ask which Yamaha model you purchased?

The update definitely did not fix the issue as it's present on every disc in this new set when playing on DV. Those who say it isn't happening on certain discs just haven't noticed it yet.

This is a serious bummer, and has me considering buying a new player.
I’ve experienced the same issue with a few Blue Underground titles and it’s seriously distracting. I don’t think the problem is player related, I think it’s an issue with the TV-Led Dolby Vision firmware on LG OLEDs. I remuxed NY Ripper, played it over Plex, and had the same flickering. I don’t have a player where you can swap to Player-Led DV but if someone does they could verify this theory. My hunch is people not reporting this issue are watching with Player-Led DV.

Ok, just so I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying that the TV processing is causing the issue, and if the player does the processing before sending to the TV the issue won't be present? If I'm off base let me know, as having an understanding of what's going on might reduce my frustration.

Do you know of any players in particular where testing this theory would be possible?

You’re right, just tested this out on the menu of 1, and the flickering happened about a half a dozen times

The odd color bleeding (and I'm not sure if that's even what to call it--- it just has an odd blend of colors-- in a dark scene with say orange colors, there is a blend of purple mixed in with the orange). The 2 discs that drive me insane are SKYFALL (ending sequence) and THE INCREDIBLES (Mr Incredible's outfit)...

I'm planning on replacing my SAMSUNG 8000 65" with a 77" LG OLED soon and I'm hoping that it;s better (and not worse!)

Yes, some TVs don’t support TV-Led DV as well, so that could also be a factor. The 820/9000 will send TV-Led DV if it’s supported by the TV and the setting cannot be changed. The only players I’m aware of where you can toggle between the two are the Oppo 203/205.

I don’t think there’s something wrong with LGs firmware but I think the combination of their firmware and these discs cause the problem. The reason I don’t think it’s an LG issue is the only discs where I’ve experienced this are from Blue Underground and now Shout.

Wow... That's a real shame considering how awesome all of these transfers are. It's distracting enough where disabling DV on the player is essential. I'm a little shocked that BU and Shout don't test these discs on LG OLEDs and fix the problem as LG has the most popular OLEDs on the market and OLED is currently the Pinnacle as far as picture quality. Just bizarre.

Thinking about buying a second UB820, but hopefully it'll drop to $350 again as that's what I previously paid for my last one..

Those two UHDs have badly clipped blacks which result in that EXACT purply/orange tinting in near black areas. It's nothing to do with your gear, your setup etc.

They used to drop to $300 at Best Buy pretty regularly but I haven't seen them dip that low again since COVID. Hell, I haven't seen them have any substantial discount anywhere since.

thanks Geoff!! That's a big relief....

I assumed it was the Yamaha because the model does have a history with a bad chip that can cause HDMI issues. Sometimes when I switch inputs (from TV to blu ray) the entire screen is bright orange or red-- I switch back again and it's fine.

While I have you, (and anyone else that cares to chime in) could you give me your input on an OLED LG?

Will it make this situation better, worse, or same?

Also-- will my blu rays (not 4k) look better or will I notice 2k limitations more?

Is the 820 Panny a good match for an OLED TV?

Lastly-- will the majority of my 4k discs look better?

thanks again for helping

Maybe someone can help me out with my blu ray player, so i don't get any sound when i play a 4k movie, no audio when playing a 4k blu ray movie but i get audio when playing a USB, not really sure whats going on the last time i used it , it was fine, the strange thing is when i play a movie it starts of with sound as its loading and you see the logo of the movie studio but as soon as i get to the movie menu and i hit play there is no audio.
