Same! H1, H2, H5 all play nice with DV on. Haven’t checked H3 yet. But H4 is giving me intermittent brightness issues. Firmware has been updated

Does anyone know why the ub820 seems to be out of stock almost everywhere in the UK? Is it being discontinued and replaced by a newer model? I'm finally upgrading to 4k and was going to get this player, but if it's being replaced by a newer model I might wait and get that instead. Many Thanks!

I doubt very much that this player is being replaced with a newer model although try eBay for the UB820. I think it's a supply issue, that's all.

Same, I didn’t really notice it in 3 but I noticed it a lot in 4, mostly during the gas station scene it did it multiple times, and then I saw it a few times in 5 but it was quick and less noticeable. Haven’t watched 1 or 2 yet. I turned off DV and that also fixed it for me. Tried playing the regular Blu-ray that comes with H4 4K and it plays flawlessly. No dimming and brightening.

Sorry to hijack the conversation about Halloween discs flickering, but I had a question about the audio decoder in the UB820 that I was hoping somebody could help me with.

I have a Denon S-540BT, which is (to my knowledgable) Denon's cheapest receiver. IIRC, the UB820 is more expensive than my 540BT.

In a case like mine, would I be better using Bitstream or PCM? I don't have an Atmos setup, and am more interested in the best sound quality. Which piece of equipment is more likely to have the better audio decoder?

(FWIW, I have tried A/B testing this, and it's difficult to do that with any degree of accuracy. To change this setting, you have to hit the Home button and stop disc playback, then re-start the disc. By the time I get through all that, my ears don't accurately recall the sound I was just hearing, so a true A/B comparison isn't really possible in this case.)

I would use bitstream. This way whatever codec format embedded in the disc will be spewed out as is. Using LPCM will require everything to be transcoded before output from the player.

The simplest thing to do is send the audio bitstream (with secondary audio and DRC turned off in the player) to the receiver and let it convert it back to PCM.

Would you recommend that for the Bose 4 piece setup (sound bar, subwoofer and two towers at the back) as well? Or is there settings on the Panasonic that I should also change? Thanks so much.

nope, that's it. That one setting is good for all applications. Let the receiver do the transcoding and the digital to analog conversion.

That's what I've got it set up as. Works fine, but introduced some more audio latency problems (up to a 182ms delay in my receiver now to correct it, which seems bonkers to me). Other than that, works well, but I'll be darned if I can tell a difference in audio between the two (although perhaps LFE is more active with Bitstream than PCM, but like I mentioned before, it's impossible to accurately say one way or the other).

I had issues with the HDR brightness fluctuation on the DV layer on both my Panasonic and Sony players. It is like the HDR drops out of certain scenes (Always in the same places). It was on my Halloween 3 disc. I have a LG C9. I think it is more of a Disc issue. The HDR version is just fine.

Just received a replacement disc not too long ago - but still so very stoked that this firmware update appears to be a panacea for DV issues. Thank you to all for the heads up - finally dusted off the UB820 and it's now back in service...

It's disc related, because some DV discs do it and some don't, but it is also the player. I had this same issue with a couple of Blue Underground releases. It seems to happen on premium releases, and if you search online it's only people who have our player who seem to have the problem.

The update definitely did not fix the issue as it's present on every disc in this new set when playing on DV. Those who say it isn't happening on certain discs just haven't noticed it yet.

This is a serious bummer, and has me considering buying a new player.

Try 1, 2, and 5 again... I thought 1 and 2 we're fine because I hadn't noticed it yet, but you can see pretty clearly just watching the opening menu on a loop that the problem is there on all of them.

okay guys-- help me out here---

for months I was trying to figure out why some of my 4k discs have had some weird issues with bleeding color on certain discs.

Turns out my Yamaha receiver I bought from Costco a year or so back has a known HBMI 2.1 issue (and apparently is not going to be fixed)

I currently have the standard set up with the Panasonic and cable going into the receiver and from there to the TV.

My question is--- can I leave everything the way it is but also run a HDMI cable from the player directly to the TV so that I bypass the video 4k signal from the receiver and have it going directly to a TV input? I'm hoping this action would take care of the video imperfections...

I would still have the audio coming directly from the receiver as well as video/audio from my cable box.

or................ can I just run audio out from the 820 to the receiver and video directly to the TV??

Please help!

Does this player have a good quick start feature? Like where it will turn on instantly?
