The Sony player will work with any compatible TV/manufacturer.

Are you trying to play Blu-ray (the titles that generally have blue cases) or Ultra HD Blu-rays (black cases)? The latter will playback in HDR and Dolby Vision.

Both players will play Ultra HD Blu-rays in HDR or Dolby Vision, I don't think either convert SDR into HDR, but they can send out SDR in a HDR signal (I think it's useful for streaming and some other issues).

If you're trying to create Faux HDR with SDR Blu-rays then your Sony probably has a setting, but if you want accurate representations of the creator's intent leave it off.
If he is trying to take SDR 1080p Blu-rays and make them have "fake HDR" then he is following in the footsteps off none other then Quantum TV.

That guy has been telling folks all about how you can force BT2020 on regular 1080p blu-rays to achieve HDR like colors. And he thinks regular HDR is total crap. Well, he is total crap. All that he is doing is adding fake color space to something that shouldn't be that. Rec709 should remain Rec709.

This setting does not apply to displays made before the days of HDR. The player will convert HDR signals to SDR and "Dynamic Range Conversion" will be displayed instead of an HDR format.

Doesn’t matter. That setting only affects HDR.

Bought a UB820 from Amazon Germany. After one week of use when I press the power button the display just says "Welcome", but nothing else happens. Eventually the player shuts down. Tried taking off the power cord, but no help.

Faulty item? Tips? Interestingly also this player had the 1.69 firmware installed already out of the box... Possibly a used player repackaged?

It feels like a faulty product. And as far as I know, fw 1.69 is not yet available out of the box (you have to download it yourself) so it is possible that the unit is a returned item.

Try a hard reset at least.
1. Turn the unit OFF.
2. Press and hold [OK], the [Yellow] button and the [Blue] button on the remote control at the same time for more than 5 seconds.
“00 RET” is displayed on the unit’s display.
3. Press [►] right repeatedly on the remote control until “08 FIN” is displayed on the unit’s display.
4. Press and hold [OK] for more than 5 seconds.

Seriously considering picking up the UB820, it's down to $497 CAD at 2001 Audio-Video. Having just bought a 65" Sony A80J, it almost feels sinful that I'm still watching UHDs on a Sony X700. Lol. Not only that, but discs are now starting to freeze on me (hadn't really happened with mine up until this point even though it's been a common issue with this model). It kept freezing on me the other day when I was trying to watch the UHD of Gladiator and I wanted to scream. I'm also getting really really sick of having to manually turn DV on/off with this bloody machine. You leave it on and it forces HDR on blu-rays, you turn it off and it doesn't recognize discs are DV encoded, etc. It's getting so annoying. I also have a region-free Sony BDP-S1200 that I've had to leave unplugged when not in use since it uses the same remote as the X700. Having to plug it in every time I want to watch a region B disc is also just beyond aggravating at this point. Great machine, though. Bought it in 2016 and it's played nearly every disc I've thrown at it.

So this is one of the best UHD players on the market right now? Sifting through the thread it seems that people are extremely happy with the UB820, and now that the firmware update fixed the DV issues I feel like this is probably a pretty safe buy.

Sadly, yes - if you don't want to spend more on the UB9000.

I am sending the unit back and reordering it, hoping the next one will be a fully working unit and preferably not a used one either. Even if it works but seems like it's a used item I will send it back in any case.

Thanks for the tip! The player however, randomly started to work again after a a couple of days. But in any case, as mentioned above, it's going back to Amazon.

It's $464 at Red One Music (free ship). Visions will beat the price by 15% of the difference, or your preferred retailer. UB9000 also on sale there. Am interested in the additional audio, just wish it played SACD.

Do you have to go in store to Visions to have them beat it by 15%?

You do it online. And they don’t beat the lower price by 15%; they beat the lower price by 15% of the difference between the two prices. So the smaller the difference, the less interesting it is, though Visions does offer some additional benefits by buying through them.

I've used it with LG, Samsung, and Sony and no issues...things just work like you expect. The price is a bit of a pinch but I don't think you'd regret picking one up. The remote does suck though, no way around it. Consider getting the ub9000 replacement remote.

I was hoping to see a deal for Black Friday to match the $350 price we've seen on the past for the Panny UB820. Don't have high hopes for Cyber Monday. Looks like I'll be keeping my LG UBK90 in the main setup for now till one hopefully pops up. Didn't see a deal on the Nvidia Shield TV Pro (2019) either, just the Tube version. I was hoping we'd see deals on both.

Just save up the money for it. I know everyone wants to wait for a deal, but the 820 and 9000 are worth paying full price. Best players on the market right now!
