When I play the BD'S in the Sony 4K 700/M they play In HDR but yet in the Panasonic 4K UB820 they only play In SDR why is that? I did just buy a new 4K TV it's the Sony 65 inch X80J if that makes a difference?

It’s usually the setup problem.

Wait, what type of Blu-rays are you talking about? Regular 1080p blu-rays or 4K UHD Blu-rays??

BD doesn’t have HDR, it won’t play in HDR. 4K BD will play in HDR.

Turn on your TV HDMI 4K enhanced on, then do this:

How do you turn on the 4K HDMI enhanced? I'm not familiar the Sony X80J Bravia? Also do you need to play a 4K Sony Blu ray player on a Sony 4K TV?

I contacted bestbuy and they said that the reason why the Panasonic won't play BD's in HDR but the Sony will is because both Blu ray players have different specs. So they answered my question s but thanks.

FFS, don't listen to them eejits. Do you know how to use the menu on the TV, like at all? You need to find the one that deals with External Inputs and change the HDMI to Enhanced, like people have said. The problem with your Panny is prolly that it's set to output 4K 12-bit 4:4:4 but this is too much 'signal' for the HDMI set to Standard so the Pannysonic player is busting it down to SDR.

To change the HDMI signal format setting, press the (Quick Settings) button on the remote control, then select [Settings] — [Channels & Inputs] — [External inputs] — [HDMI signal format] — the HDMI input you want to set.
Follow the on-screen instructions, and set the HDMI signal format to Enhanced Format.

The Sony player will work with any compatible TV/manufacturer.

Are you trying to play Blu-ray (the titles that generally have blue cases) or Ultra HD Blu-rays (black cases)? The latter will playback in HDR and Dolby Vision.

Both players will play Ultra HD Blu-rays in HDR or Dolby Vision, I don't think either convert SDR into HDR, but they can send out SDR in a HDR signal (I think it's useful for streaming and some other issues).

If you're trying to create Faux HDR with SDR Blu-rays then your Sony probably has a setting, but if you want accurate representations of the creator's intent leave it off.

And you listen to them? BD should NEVER be played in HDR. Only HDR movies should be played in HDR.

Question: Is there any difference to the sound output between the 820/9000. I ask because I upgraded to a bose 900 dolby atmos bar and wanted to know if down the road I should look into getting the 9000? Thanks so much.

You should only choose 1080p. No HDR as 1080p format does not have HDR in the specs.

It won't apply to your display, you could pretty much have all the settings at Auto and just tweak the Range Adjustment control for HDR to SDR brightness/contrast trade-offs.

The 9000 has some components more geared to audio enthusiasts. If you're just watching movies/shows/gaming then the 820 will be fine. Unless you want the added build quality of the 9000 or want to show it off in an AV rack.
