There will be less options going forward unless we see some decent players from smaller brands, but that's a long shot. If you're happy to buy something as a backup, it's worth getting sooner rather than later.

I wish Panasonic would come out with a new model with SACD and DVD-Audio support, then a lot of OPPO owners would buy the Panasonic for a second room. |

Get it. No major is releasing new players. Get 'em while you can.

It was very short lived but B&H photo had it for $320 in June. I believe that to be the lowest price so far for one brand new.

Wanted to add this to a list of issues I've encountered:
My UB9000 (bought in March) has developed an issue where the disc tray will sometimes not go back in when I press the eject/open/close button. I have to gently persuade it by pressing on the tray front and then the mechanism takes. The tray on this device is one of the best things about it, it's nice and quiet, has a nice rubber finish, but I did not expect it to start misbehaving like this after 5 months of use. Needless to say, I'm filling out a warranty service form. Honestly, this is like the third or fourth thing to go wrong with my Panasonic products. I handle them with the utmost care - I look after my tech and I don't abuse it because it is expensive and I want longevity out the things I buy. I think either I'm extremely unlucky or the folks claiming Panasonic products to be superior probably aren't using anything they've manufactured in the last few years. This is getting a little ridiculous. |

I just pulled the trigger on the 820. Looking forward to digging into all of the options and features. Thanks for the link in above post.
The bare bones but reliable LG UBK90 moves to the bedroom. That unit gets too much grief around here. Two years and it’s been solid for me, and it’s been worked heavily over that time. |

I just bought the Panasonic UB820. What would be the best HDMI cable for this unit? I have a Sony X900F.
I am thinking about buying the Audioquest Ocean 5' IN-WALL HDMI 2.1 Cable. |

I hope that's not true and we eventually get another model. I'm guessing it's a bit like appliances where once someone has a player, you aren't getting any new business from them unless it breaks so it's not super profitable. I just hope we have at least ONE manufacturer that sticks around and keeps making players for us. I guess the good news is that there will always be Xbox and PS5s around. It's not ideal but at least it's a player. I just don't want a future of having a wall of movies and there be no players to play them on. |

I have a Samsung Q70 which appears to support 4:4:4. I just wonder if the Panny 820 has been correctly using 4:4:4 or using 4:2:2 by default? I'll try forcing it but I wonder if it's noticeable.

Audioquest is BS and overpriced. Monoprice sells a certified 48 Gbps cable for $9, as an example. I use their certified 4k Slim cables for short runs like these because they don't put any strain on the HDMI ports, are flexible, and they work just fine. You don't need 2.1 cables for these 4k disc players. |

I personally leave it off. It's one of those frequency booster things meant to upscale compressed stuff. It sounds too sharp for my tastes so I turn it off.

so it does something to sound even if it goes bitstream to receiver? because it's the only option to turn off display during playback
