I was gonna say the same thing. There’s no way this 5 year old ub820 disc spinner costs over $200 to manufacture. $350 new on the shelf is approaching fair. The $550 OLED and $500 PS5 bundle were both better deals.

Anybody find this odd?

I noticed the same things happen with my ub420 as well. Very strange
Ok, this is a follow-up to a very old post. But this continued to happen for awhile. One night I was vacuuming in the basement where the home theater set-up is. The vacuum tripped the outlet. So I reset the breaker for the entire basement (have to once in awhile). Ever since then…the player hasn’t frozen up once.

So I guess maybe the outlet wasn’t getting enough power before. Maybe the player would lose power for a split second while starting up? Just crazy. I was actually keeping count before; how many times the player started up without freezing. I stopped keeping count after I got past 30 times .

So a happy accident fixed my start-up issue

This is a common problem with cheapo power bars. I had problem similar to this but on my modem. About once a week I had to reset the modem. This is until one of the tech support asked me to try using the modem with power bar. Three years later, never a freeze. I have even forgotten that this modem is not plugged in to a power bar until I read your post.

It’s just weird. I’ve had the same surge protector for years. Never had issues until that time. But it’s been all good ever since.

After a couple of years, surge protectors are not protecting anymore. The components that “absorb” the surges are self sacrificing and after a while your surge protector protects nothing anymore and functions only as a multi prong power outlets.

I currently use Austere for the whole house. I get rid of all my power bars every 3 years… just in case.

Only whole-house surge protectors work for lightning strikes or nasty stuff anyway, all the little ones won't do anything, and none of your gear is going to get fired by little surges unless it's some vintage equipment or insanely cheap. I got hit by lightning once just before a storm started and 30% of my stuff died and it was all plugged into working surge protectors at the time. These days if a bad storm comes through I just turn the house off.

Just bought one from Best Buy for $10; 6-outlet 1,080 joules. The one upstairs is only a year old. Thanks for the advice!

Back in 2016 I lost a Sony 4K TV to a lightning strike close outside. There was a power surge. The electronics survived but the Sony TV had 3 bad HDMI inputs due to the surge. It was frustrating I would turn the TV on and watch and it worked for a minute than went out no signal. Kind of a nice reminder of the power of lightning. If there is a bad storm with tons of cloud to ground lightning and I catch it in time I just unplug stuff from the wall outlet till it's over. I still have the TV in storage but it needs a new mainboard the lightning surged it.

I had an electrician explain it to me once, I'm sure opinions vary, but he said surge protectors are mostly a marketing scam, your gear is probably fine without them and they don't stop your gear from getting fried from a big surge. I don't spend a lot on them, I think I have two big monoprice ones I got back a few years ago that replaced some from 2013. I still have a big old APC surge protector that I use for a power strip the lights are still on. My new ones are supposed to have a clamp circuit that disables it if the surge supression fails

Yes in a way they don't and can't stop a surge going through your outlet after a close lightning strike. Obviously people can't catch it in time some may be working, sleeping,at school. Best bet is to unplug the outlet from the wall during a storm with bad lightning. I actually had a surge protector and the TV still got fried.

Not all surge protectors are created equal. Yes most of them eventually wear out but a big part that people overlook is the clamping voltage and it’s not always evident on the specs of the surge protector. The best ones clamp anything above 360V across the different paths. Many units when you look at the fine print only clamp at 500V or higher. And right out avoid anything that doesn’t specifically state the clamping voltage.

Just a thing to be aware of.

First time on YouTube?

It's crazy how much people rely on this trick, some even calling Panasonic players "practically region free", when the function itself is super hit or miss.

Like, you should never buy a region locked disc with the mindset that "eh, I'll just use the TOP MENU thing and it'll be fine", unless you know for a fact that it works on that specific disc.

Region free players/mods are very much worth investing in, and this is not reliable alternative.

I was definitely familiar with how YouTube people stretch out the actual info like taffy, babbling endlessly with filler, in order to create longer viedos they can monetize.

I was just truly curious to see if he could stretch out something that takes literally 5 seconds to explain over 12 MINUTES, haha.

Turns out, he did, mostly by leaving HUGE silent gaps, repeating every step about a dozen times, and just giving a sort of stream-of-consciousness monologue about nonsense.

I was actually impressed, in a sort of "performance art" kind of way that he managed to do this.

If my life depended on me creating a 15-minute video in which I simply show people how to put popcorn in a microwave and hit 1:45, I'm not sure I should stretch it out beyond 1:47, lol, but this dude could make it into an epic longer than Killers of the Flower Moon. It's definitely a skill.

I like how he shows the trick on two titles from the same label, Radiance, and one that's clearly not even region locked, eXistenZ.

Like, if you're gonna make a 12 minute video on a trick that can be explained in a single sentence, prep it properly and have some titles from multiple labels at the ready, to showcase it.
