There’s no way they implement whatever you talked about is called. It’s not in the UHD Blu-ray specs.

Wow, it just dawned on me that my physical film collection - which I hope to enjoy with my future kids in the years to come lol - is meaningless if the players break down and there are no replacements available.

I got my UB820 about 2 years ago and love it, but have only used it sparingly. I watched my 4K UHD of Batman Begins last night and just finished TDK tonight. After watching both films, the player felt quite warm, and even the discs were warm when I took them out. I don't think I've ever experienced that before. The last time I used it was a week ago when I watched The Princess Bride's 4K UHD and didn't notice any heat issues. I'm getting worried now that my player might have some overheating issues incoming. If so, what do I do?? Has anyone else had similar experiences?

My Oppo can also get hot. I wouldn’t worry about it.

All the players make the UHD discs hot, seems normal to me.

Well even HD DVD owners were able to rip their entire collections at some point, by the time you need to do that with UHD prices for storage should be way cheaper than they are now, I'm personally waiting for 16-32tb or higher flash storage before I do it. I wouldn't worry. There's no reason why the next Xbox or PS6 wouldn't also run Ultra HD they may even put the games on those at some point.

They would have to set a new standard. Like UHD+ specs

Bluray standard came on June 20th 2006.
UHD came on February 14th 2016.

9.5 years.

We are approaching 8 years for the UHD format.

It's not so much the fact that the UB820 is pretty "definitive", but more so that there aren't any new features to market new players with. During the BD days you had 3D coming out so that was a big marketing thing, then steaming started to pick up so a player with "Smart" features was desired, then came the 4K TVs so 4K Upscaling was the selling point. That and the fact that physical media was in its prime so the market was thriving.

The first part about seemless branching seems reasonable, but switching to PCM would omit the atmos metadata, yes?

The dropouts stopped when I connected either (1) UB820 HDMI Video/Audio, or (2) UB820 HDMI Audio directly to the soundbar. Maybe this is helpful to someone else in the future (thank you all for suggestions)

Is quick start enabled? Try disabling that feature and see if it helps with the heat issues.

Your player has a fan on the back of it. So don't worry too much.

Watched Kong:Skull Island in 4K a few nights ago and it looked and sounded great, as did a few standard Blu-rays. However, I watched Transformers: The Movie in 4K last night and the movie froze around the 27 and 60 min. marks. I tried taking the disc out to wipe for dust or smudges and it still froze up on those same spots. Did I get a lemon disc or player?

Yeah thanks, I came across that during my Google search last night haha but I already had it turned off. The environment is probably a factor though.

If you clean the disc and still happens in the same spot,u have a lemon disc change it if possible

Received my N2QAYA000172 remote yesterday (eBay seller: Ometter-Remote-Control). Packaging was decent. No box but well protected by bubble wrap. Minor ding towards the bottom of the remote but nothing major. I initially thought it was poorly made because it looked likes parts of it were peeling off but that was actually a protective film covering everything except the buttons. Pretty shocked something this cheap would bother with that. Made in China but it included a sticker for something called “eVatmaster” in Germany. Google reviews accuse the company of making counterfeits FWIW.

It’s definitely an upgrade over the standard UB820 remote but I haven’t been able to get it to pair with my Sony 950H or my LG C1 when using the method suggested in this thread a few years back. Is it common for these to lack that functionality?

Photos below for anyone curious about the packaging used by this seller.

I also got my upgraded remote. It's quite a luxury now with the backlit, the subtitle button is a godsend, as I'm addicted to dimming almost every disc's subtitles now. That annoying Netflix button is finally tucked off to the side, and finally I have balance back holding the darn thing. Highly recommended over the standard UB820 remote.

The remotes for the 9000 only control Panasonic TVs if i recall, I have two 900 remotes i think a CA one and another one and only one supports third-party TV control.

It's funny that folks like a weighty remote, lots of companies know it adds a premium feel, so they add strips of lead inside!

Magically as soon as the sale was over , back in stock at $500 , big pass till its back down to $350 and with my BB gift cards will be a nice $150 plus tax . Good thing I'm in no hurry . Anytime I see open box and click on it , there never anything for sale , I don't know why they even list open box on best buy . Crutchfield on the other hand always has open boxes for stuff .

I don't like being a cynic but they obviously do this stuff on purpose with certain items. Make it look sold out and they have no stock. They want you to pay the full price.

Now no one will want to pay $500 for it so they'll need another sale to move more units I went through this same thing when I got my X700 for $150 it was back to $258 for the next 3 months but then hit a sale again and was back down to near $150 this month.

Looks like everyone is getting their knock off remotes from China this week!

I got mine as well. At first I thought it was a burrito in my mailbox!

As Cherokee Jack pointed out, mine had a plastic film applied as well. Once you peel it off it reveals a piano black/glossy finish.

The backlight works great!

A few thoughts..

Buttons function well with little effort-as they should. I had a knockoff remote for a different player and you had to press so hard for the buttons to engage. These buttons have a soft touch rubbery texture to them. Dare I say premium feel.

I’ve never held the genuine 9000 remote, but it would be interesting to compare them side by side. This remote is very lightweight which is the only “cheap” identifying factor I can come up with. It’s worth mentioning that while the buttons feel “premium” the actual remote does not due to how light it is.

But hey…for $12 shipped you really can’t go wrong. Heck..for those who have the genuine remote and want to keep it in pristine condition, etc. this is a great alternative back up remote.

I definitely recommend this remote. While I doubt it weighs the same as the 9000 remote, I still give it a 4/5. The bottom line: it works and does the job.

I was not expecting this to be as nice as it is. Glad I went ahead and purchased it. For those following my previous posts in this thread, my 820 did not come with a remote so I’ve been using my 10-year old Panny remote with no HDR button. To say this remote is worth the upgrade over the 820, is a massive understatement.

It's still going to be better than the 820 remote. Glad you recommend it. Looking at it up close they actually have all the words spelled right to. That backlight is really bright imo the brighter the better especially if you watch movies in the dark.

If I saw that it was on sale for $350 I don't blame people at all for not wanting to pay the full price. The 820 is an awesome UHD player but $350 is what the price should always be on this one not $500. Even the UB9000 is a bit over priced imo $799 is what the price should always be on it.
