If you're lucky you can get a 4K TV which will play back a 3840x2160 over/under image which is still just 1080 vertical res to each eye, but frame-packed 4K 3D input - which would be something like 3840x4365, inclusive of 45 blanking lines like BD 3D - is pie-in-the-sky territory at the moment.

Some 4K TVs, like the Sonys, don't even allow for over/under or simulated 3D processing of 4K signals, never mind anything else. Samsung's 4K sets are best poised in this regard, as they'll be able to have their one connect box upgraded when the time comes, but that won't come cheap.
I'm curious, what does 3D in the cinemas use if not 3D in 4K (4K3D)?

Well, as a football/soccer fan, esp. since the Pele biopic got delayed, I would like to hear a Sony announcement about the releasing of the finished documentary 4K Film of the 2014 FIFA World Cup which was recorded at 4K (3840x2160) at 59.94p (3G Level B)…4K 4:2:2 10bit, exported as uncompressed DPX to the archive.

But alas, since the project was a Sony/FIFA co-venture, I just don’t know how much the relationship has soured since Sony terminated sponsorship last autumn….http://www.polygon.com/2014/11/30/73...rruption-probe

My 4K TV arrived, HDMI 2.0 and HDCP 2.2 all present ready for 4K Blu-rays next year. For now, a long wait watching USB demo clips and upscaled Blu-rays...

Went for an LG55UB850V. The Sonys in that price range failed to do 3D at 1080p according to reviews, and the Samsung equivalent at this price was 49" and I decided to get the bigger.

My internet speed is not even quick enough for 1080p so there will be no 4K streaming in this house - waiting for the postman to bring Timescapes 4K USB

Oh yes, I'll never forget that game. Sweet revenge!

Downsampled 8K footage to 4K? That is awesome! I saw some of the Confederations Cup 4K footage at Best Buy at the Mall of America and spent a good 20 minutes staring at it, mesmerized. 4K sports will be incredible!

As to “the bigger”, good move, because image size matters and I find the value of that feature to be generally underappreciated/underestimated by some videophiles (https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...ze#post9667384 ), contrary to other people I’ve spoken to having to endure tunnel vision secondary to glaucomatous optic nerve damage.

Last summer, the shortie promo for the FIFA World Cup that was being shown in some retail stores actually included some NHK 8K -> 4K imagery, which, as part of the editorial process, had to be color matched to the Sony 4K camera captured imagery. From what I saw, it worked out well.

Steed, have you watched this Blu-ray movie yet?...like we previously briefly discussed months ago.

I seriously considered the 49" but knew I'd regret it later. My previous TV was 40" so a bit of a jump in size. I think the previous TV occupied 40° field of view - there was a link to a site to calculate this not long ago - I think its now more like 60° and much more immersive. After much debate watched Jurassic Park 3D last night as the first movie and it was fantastic.

Also my wife has now noticed the difference between SD and HD broadcast channels, she couldn't really tell before. Shame her favourite channel is only SD only on free to air :/

Reminds me, given best movie candidates for leveraging different parameters of a 4K Blu-ray launch, like as previously noted on the last page…

a smart thing to do would be to choose at least mildly to moderately popular motion pictures characterized by an unfiltered look (i.e. no ‘aesthetic’ softening secondary to in camera or post production defocus) using sharp glass (i.e. good Master Primes, etc.) as well as content that leverages the perception of higher resolution - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...on#post9573269
Thinking further on down the evolution imaging road, in regards to a proposed HDR part of the UHD equation, The Equalizer screams for an HDR pass, like in the opening scene in “Bob”s apartment looking out at the bright daylight through his apartment rooms (and, for that matter, other scenes in the flick, e.g. prior to the ‘Pip’ dance segment at his workplace where he’s looking outside from his workplace, etc.) would demonstrate the broad value of HDR, in that it is not only about brightness but rather high contrast, i.e. improved shadow detail on up to unclipped bright highlights.

It’s really no coincidence that the next generation ‘StEM’ reference material for filmmakers to be offered from the Academy, primarily concentrating on HDR, HFR, different spatial resolution (2K vs 4K) and shutter angle, includes a comprehensive shoot involving dollying back-and-forth across an interior sometimes while peering out of windows into bright daylight stressing the value of dynamic range in cinematography.
