Curious. Is this one of, if not the only Blus that has this problem? I know almost every movie has the insert about the firmware and all that, but this was the first (and as of now, only) time I had a problem playing a Blu to this extent.

Starship Troopers had the same issue.

Default Crank High Voltage

All you have to do is put some type of external storage device in your player regardless if you have bd live or not. I know this because I bought Crank 2 and it was playing only on an 8" area on my screen and my tv is 46" so I did some research and I just plugged in my flashdirve and restarted the player and it worked

Just ordered this movie from Walmart.com and now I'm taking it back to get my money back. Not only does this movie not work but I've tried updating the firmware, inserting an external USB drive, nothing works.

I'll never buy another Lionsgate title again, as long as I live.

This is the exact reason why I have been avoiding buying the Avatar movie, ever since I discovered that you needed to update your firmware in order to watch the movie. Best Buy had plastered warning signs about the movie all over their store.

Lionsgate sucks.

I read somewhere that in order for the movie to load on the Sony you have to use the back USB port. Again a PITA but if you really want to watch this crappy movie try that.

What if you turn off BD-Live? Does it still require a USB flash drive?

I find this odd because Crank 2 plays fine on Profile 1.1 players since they don't use BD-Live. It's only Profile 2.0 players that require you to plug in a USB drive. So, if you turn off BD-Live on a Profile 2.0 player, wouldn't that make it Profile 1.1 then? And therefore, shouldn't Crank 2 be able to play without a USB?

No

Even if BD live is turned off this stupid movie still needs a SD card or USB drive in order to load properly.

I finally got it to work but I think it's a shit move by Sony to require something as asine as this work-around. I had to delete everything off my 2GB USB drive in order to get Crank 2 to work.

Studios need to release their titles without the need of calling for an external memory source.

I had the same problem with the UK Crank 2, returned it. Bought the Dutch version and that one works perfectly fine.

Why should I buy a Playstation 3? Sony has had nothing but problems with their system AND I only spent $150 on my Blu-ray player where the PS3 is double that price. I don't purchase defective merchandise.

Take a look at Sony's recent "gaffe." Their latest firmware update disabled the PS3 so that you cannot upgrade the PS3 Hard Drive. Every time Sony releases a firmware update, they have always had problems, with every firmware update. Sony cannot seem to get it right.

Plus, I do not use "GAME SYSTEMS" to watch my Blu-ray movies. Not even for my DVD's. The PS3 is the world's most expensive Blu-ray player and it is a huge dust magnet.

Additionally, Blu-ray players were made specifically for Blu-ray movies. Game Systems are made for playing video games.

I just don't trust Sony merchandise because I have had nothing but problems with every piece of Sony merchandise I have ever bought.

That's correct. I have BD Live disabled and my Blu-ray player still won't play the movie without the USB drive. Lionsgate really screwed up on this one.

I had zero issues with Avatar on an older Panny BD-35 player. What you saw was the new standard warning (from the studios) that some bluray players might need a firmware update, not all BD players need to run a update.

That may very well be. However, whenever I see a warning attached to a product about usability, such as a movie release, I avoid that particular item like the plague.

It's all about "image" and that notice set off all kinds of warning flags telling me not to even think about purchasing Avatar.

You will then miss out on alot of new movies. Every BD has the exact same warning. All of mine have a slip of paper inside stating the same advice. Just because there are only two movies, Crank 2 and Starship Troopers, that required a memory card on 2.0 profile players should not sour your view of BDs in general.

hometheatergeek, really? I have purchased 140 Blu-ray titles that have worked fine without any firmware updates and didn't come with any warning.

Really? Because at least 3/4 of the ones I own have the "Because Blu-ray is a new format, you may need to update your player's firmware in order to blah blah blah" warning at the beginning, right along with the FBI anti-piracy warning.

Thusfar, I haven't had to update my firmware for anything, despite all the warnings. And to my knowledge, only two of the discs I own required that I have external memory installed...Starship Troopers and Crank 2.
