I haven't seen the film, but hopefully it is better than the artwork haha!

How does it compare with Autumn Sonata? I am really excited to get this

Its one of Bergmans best films, even better than Autumn Sonata

It's been several years since I've seen both of them. Cries is a chamber piece and very heavy. The color red features very prominently.

Here is a link to Bosley Crowther's New York Times original 1947 review of Ride the Pink Horse.

Sounds great.

Ah sweet! Does it contain the emotion that Autumn Sonata has?

I am so excited abut this snow, I only compare the two as the trailer had elements that reminded me of Autumn Sonata :P and yes the red seemed very important!

Be nice to see it on Criteiron Bluray, just same the cover doesn't excite me!

I was kind of hoping Criterion would do a Truffaut set themselves. Now I am left wondering if they are just going to slowly put them out over time or if a possible Eclipse set is all I can expect. A lot of Artificial Eye and BFI Blu-ray releases have come out for films that Criterion only issued on DVD in the Eclipse line.

Definitely in for the Bergman film. Glad to see some love given to documentaries, if only because not a lot of documentary films come out on the format. I haven't seen any of them so I have no other opinion at the moment.
I agree re the Truffaut. It's good to see The Soft Skin finally coming out, as we knew it would, but a box set would have made me think twice about getting the UK set of non-Doinel films. For now, I think the UK set is a great option, as I think we can safely assume that it would take years for Criterion to release the same lot of films as found in the AE box, if in fact they ever do. The additional extras on the Criterion Soft Skin are not substantial. It will be interesting to see how the transfer compares to the AE version.

The Doinel films are another matter - I hope Criterion upgrades their box soon.

Re the cover art for Soft Skin and Cries and Whispers - I like the both, a lot. Bollocks to the naysayers...

Cries and Whispers is by far one of Bergmans most emotionally draining films.
I guarantee you you wont be disappointed with this

Me, too, Bugsy. Smart art and in-your-face......raw cover for a very raw film. Doubt it's going to boost any Criterion sales for Cries and Whispers, but they're probably thinking the film is well enough established that they don't need to prettify it. I'd bet they're just aiming for an audience that already knows the movie. It's just very smart to me.

I'm interested in a lot of the films this month. A minor noir, a lesser Truffaut and a couple of documentaries I didn't even know existed. I often enjoy Criterion releases like this that give some depth to what I know. Following turned out to be one of my top three Nolans, and Seconds made me do a double take on Frankenheimer. No other label adds value like that to my experience of film.

And there's no denying the importance of Thin Blue Line and Hoop Dreams. Seems like a pretty good month to me.

Excited for the Cries & Whispers upgrade! Been patiently waiting for that announcement, but yes, too bad about that cover art.

I've seen nearly a dozen Truffaut films, but The Soft Skin is not one of them. Will be adding it to my hulu plus queue.

I'm with you there. I've seen almost all of Truffaut's films but The Soft Skin I've yet to see. Should be great.

Because for each person who thinks it's a good idea, there will be several others who think it's a bad idea. Having variety each month is a good thing.

You do realize that that's an oxymoron. If they are PD titles, Criterion wouldn't need to "license" them.

Ride the Pink Horse looks great, always welcome a film noir.
The Thin Blue Line and Hoop Dreams look great as well.

I couldn't get the link to work but I'll just say It is great. I love these lesser-known, seldom-mentioned noirs. This one would make a nice companion to Touch of Evil with both sharing south of the border locations. I'd also love for Robert Wise's Odds Against Tomorrow to get a release on Blu-Ray. I think it's kind of a toss-up between it and Touch of Evil as being the last of the true Noirs before we get into that other terminology.....what is it...Neo noir?

In light of the recent announcements, I just watched The Thin Blue Line (for the first time) on Netflix. It exuded creative and well executed style that added to the experience without being distracting (for the most part). Well done, powerful, and infuriating. It would make an extremely intense double bill with Into The Abyss (also on Netflix).

Interesting line up. I'm surprised that Hoop Dreams is coming to Blu, but it's a pleasant surprise. I've been wanting to see Cries and Whispers and The Thin Blue Line for a while.
