The Spy Who Came In From The Cold probably the best spy thriller ever made. You can't go wrong with it.

They usually have one that runs in July. I cannot remember if they have a 40% blu-ray sale before that in June.

I was wondering, maybe it has been discussed on here, whether there will be a US 4k re-release of The Third Man. I know Lionsgate held the last release, but am unsure if StudioCanal struck a deal with Criterion for any new or future releases.

When the date is known, usually someone creates a thread in the deals section with the info, even if it hasn't started yet.

In the case of AoAM, it is the opposite, the widescreen is a top & bottom crop of the originally captured 4:3 frame, which is fully shown in the US DVD.

I’m very much thankful for the clarification provided by ravenus. My sister bought my Anatomy of a Murder on DVD a few years back before I had gone to blu-ray. I haven’t opened it yet and I’ve debated whether I will keep it or sell and upgrade. (I’ve seen the film. I agree with others here in saying that it is a very good movie.) Thinking that it was a cropped image might have had me making a hasty decision to part with it. P & S… no good.

I would venture to guess that it would start on Tuesday July 7th. B&N always begin their sales on Tuesday and it should follow their annual "Buy 2 Get 1 Free" Sale.

I'm completely confused now. OAR was 1:85, yet these screenshots show much more information in the full frame, than in either of the widescreen presentations :

That's because it was filmed open-matte and was always intended to be projected at 1:85. This is true for a lot of movies.

Guess I hate being reminded that my preference for wide can sometimes mean I'm missing out on the whole picture.

ok. and pardon me because paying close attention to aspect ratios is kinda new to me. what hansolo says here is that both are correct. more info on the top and bottom of the frame is how it was intended for home video. is that correct?

hansolo isn't saying that both are correct, but many films were shot in 4:3 with the intention of projecting in widescreen even before the advent of home video. I guess it was probably because it was cheaper than using actual anamorphic lenses and also avoided some of the optical anomalies inherent to their use (Cinemascope mumps). The downside is that the zooming in during projection would cause some amount of resolution loss, but in a theater it wouldn't be that noticeable.

are (were) they actually zooming in though? it seems that there is more info on the left and right of the image in the widescreen (the intended) look, so it appears to be more of a matter of framing.

I got Cinemascope mumps in college. It was awful. Worse than coxsackie.

Hope the tray of life clue was a double clue to finally get this film on Criterion Bluray.
(I mean if it was only a clue for Here is your life, they could have drawn just one hand handing the life. Why draw a tray (=tree)? )
Of course I'm hoping for other films too, but that one seems more possible than all my other requests.

I would love to see:

Barton Fink
The Bank Dick + Six Short Films by W.C. Fields
After Hours
Le Samourai
The Phantom Of Liberty
The Circus

That would make me happy.

Let's predict the next Mulholland Drive.

I'm going to go with Spartacus. Universal is set to release a brand spanking new 4k remaster later this year and if history is any guide there's nothing like a really good existing release to vault a title to top of a lot of Criterion wishlists.
