thanks! those sound interesting.

my library has a pretty awesome selection, but for this director, they only have
Voyage Du Ballon Rouge : Flight Of The Red Balloon and Café Lumière.

worth my time or should I try to find another way to see the ones you mentioned?

What makes it tricky too are the only English subbed versions I've found don't have the intertitles translated (although these can be found online)

I wish this film was easier to get your hands on in English friendly formats.

I think he's Criterion's George Kaplan.
You're probably right.

I never once wondered if he was real or not...I just always assumed he was. But now I did some investigative journalism myself and could not find one single photo of "Jon Mulvaney" anywhere via the Google search engine. He may very well be a pseudonym for the customer support's "face" for the company.

I feel like an idiot for not realizing this sooner!

We could start a find Jon Mulvaney campaign - or get someone to get into he offices to find him.

What if he's really a woman.

EDIT:

I might email him and ask for a picture lol

They're good films, but I wouldn't say that they're his best or most representative of his work - Flight of the Red Balloon being his only non-Asian film and Cafe Lumiere being commissioned as a homage to Yasujiro Ozu. But seeing as they're the easiest to find, I wouldn't say to avoid starting with them

A City of Sadness is on YouTube here:
[Show spoiler]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uudx6d71tdQ

Definitely start with this one . I wish it was on YouTube when I tried to get hold of it. I had to buy a VHS player and rent it from my library . I'm going to try and get the blu when I go to Taiwan in two weeks

His rare film Daughter of the Nile is on YouTube as well, which I'll be watching later.

There isn't a Blu-Ray release of A City of Sadness, but you can get A Time to Live, a Time to Die and Dust in the Wind

There's a blu of A City Of Sadness?

Edit: Yami beat me to it, in a much more authoritative fashion.

I can also confirm a female friend I know who loves A Clockwork Orange. When she told me it was her FAVOURITE film of all time, I even did the lame nerdy male SJW whine of "Yah but dat rape scene is pretty intenszz ehhh..." (even though truthfully it doesn't really bother me personally) but that apparently was barely an issue for her.

I find that, as men, we usually start building a trap for ourselves when we presume to know what women (emphasis on the plural) like, and worse, modulate our responses to art based on this assumption. It's best to not even try to pretend, actually.

You'll probably receive a picture of a fat Orson Welles holding a balloon.

More than "fond of" - he outright lifted half a dozen scenes, including camera techniques, musical cues, etc. It's very embarrassing once you've seen it.

This reminds me of when Kyle Smith foolishly claimed Goodfellas can only be appreciated by men, and rightly received a ton of flak.
I'm not faulting women for liking or not liking the film. I dislike the film myself!

You simply cannot deny that there is a much larger "community" of male (rather than female) film fans/students/geeks/losers who love that sort of film at a certain age, and are especially vocal about it after discovering it. It's a good film, but hopefully one that the viewer grows out of as they age. Unfortunately, that crowd of "guys" are generally the same idiots who love to genuflect to "Sir" Ridley Scott and think Chris Nolan is great because someone finally "took Batman seriously," ugh.

Thinking Christopher Nolan is great because he did a darker more serious take on Batman makes you an idiot?

Sorry but calling people idiots for having legitimate opinions you disagree with lowers the discourse on any subject matter.

...it certainly doesn't make you sound smart.

Nolan is the most turgid, dull director since John Sturges. His films are wretchedly pretentious. The fanboys are salivating with anticipation of his eventual beknighting! Oh, SIR Christopher, grace us with your next vision! Perhaps a re-imagining of the Herbie Popnecker saga? Maybe another remake? Haha, good times.

No, I can deny it. One's gender has absolutely zero relevance to the enjoyment of a particular film. You're putting the film into a little box, implying its values are only attracted by males, which really has no basis outside of your "I worked in a video store and I've seen things" claim.

But you sound condescending in general to those that hold it in high regard, so I suppose it doesn't matter much. By the way, it must be said, this is coming from someone that would place the film at the top of Kubrick's filmography (and I adore the man), and I don't view Nolan as some God. Even if I did, though, that wouldn't matter, and it wouldn't be a slight against my taste. I understand where you're coming from, that the film attracts certain adolescents, but those are the same people that tune out Scarface during its third act. There's another audience, such as those who voted the film in those annual critics polls, that admire it for ways you don't seem to accept.

And you managed to insult fans of Christopher Nolan and Ridley Scott...kudos!
