They're still releasing titles in the Scanovo cases (Ikiru, In Cold Blood, Code Unknown, Kwaidan, A Special Day, etc.). There do seem to be more digipaks nowadays, though.

I had For All Mankind replaced this past spring and took almost 2 months to get it back. CC is pretty small business, so I can't imagine the staff being big enough to take care of these things in a quick turn around.

Patience is necessary here I think. I waited 3-4 weeks once, as well as having a disc never show up in which I had to send another email about a month later. You'll get a response/replacement but it's not like it's Amazon Prime.

Like somebody else said, they are releasing most of their titles in the Scanavo cases again. I guess they figured those three were extra special? I don't know, but at the very least it was a coincidence even though I'm sure a title here and there will still come out in one like they did even before their dual-format releases.

Sorry in advance if this has already been asked and answered, but has anyone heard when this year's "Barnes and Noble 40% Off All Blu-rays Sale" begins?

I think it's speculated for the 15th, after the current British TV sale.

Question on Paris, Texas...

I was working on a Top 10 list to see how many foreign films are now personal favorites. (A family member scoffed at me yesterday for "reading" so many movies.)
Is Paris, Texas considered a US release? German? French? All of the above?

I'm mulling over my list now, but this is definitely top 15 for me. It may crack the top 10.

Is this the same family member who humiliated you for not having Bourne Trilogy in your top 10?

wiki lists multiple countries for Paris, Texas

West Germany
France
United Kingdom
United States

It is probably better to consider foreign language films (primary language is not English)

I tend to consider films in American English to be United States films.

It's irrelevant, in my opinion, that Wim Wenders is a German director.

Yes, he always asks what new "Centurion" movies I'm watching. It's all in good fun. He probably watches the least amount of movies out of everyone I know so our running joke is when I ask if he's seen "X" movie.

They are hosting an exchange student from South Korea that loves movies, but he is having a hard time following US releases. His English is good, but the movies move too fast for him to process everything. I'm trying to get them to watch some of my classics, but I'm not having any success.

I have become the family film snob.

I was thinking more along the lines of Against All Odds and some of the TV roles he used to pop up in here and there from the 70's and 80's. Just me being weird I guess. And yeah, Night and the City is a great release. Beautiful transfer. Will put away some time ASAP to check out the commentary track. Watching it made me want to revisit another Dassin film..Rififi. That one is still great as well.

Criterion lists Paris, Texas with their German films, probably based on the production company being German. I'm not sure I agree. An English-language film filmed on location in the U.S. with a mostly American cast and based on a script by American writers, I'd say it was a U.S. film.

Every family needs a film snob!

I work with international students a lot, and that always means movies. If he's having trouble following some films, I'd steer him towards things like Pixar or action, Mockingjay types. Up is a very good movie but easy to follow. If you're looking for Centurian releases, Charlie Chaplin is truly international. I showed Modern Times to a group once, and a Saudi kid was so taken with the film that he actually asked me to confirm that the actors were now dead. A lot of the silents and melodramas are easy to follow. Sirk?

Probably steer your guy away from dialog-heavy stuff in the theater or on blu-ray, but there's a lot he can follow outside that. The rap on Hollywood is that the industry dominates international film markets because of its financial heft, but I think a big part of its strength is that it uses a cinematic language that goes across cultural lines more easily than that of other cinemas. I'd guess that goes back to the multi-cultural USA that Hollywood has to succeed with.

The replacement program is still in place. Click here for details. I replaced my bronzed copies of Summer Hours and Walkabout this year, and in both instances, I had my replacement copies in hand within 15 working days (3 weeks). I was very happy with the turnaround time.

Hope that helps.

I really like The Manchurian Candidate, but geez... to me, the Yang coming soon is MUCH bigger news. I know that we kinda knew, but this would seem to (almost) confirm that we'll see it in the next 6 months or so.

So many of these Asian films seem to have been neglected or are difficult to find in English friendly versions. I'd like to see more releases like this one on the horizon.

I received my final two selections during the 50% off B&N sale in the mail just moments ago: Ikiru and A Special Day. I saw Ikiru in my Japanese cinema class in college and really quite enjoyed it; Kurosawa is, of course, a genius, and that's clearly evident in Ikiru. Now, I've never seen A Special Day, nor have I seen any film by Scola, but I really like Mastroianni and Loren, so I'm thinking I'll probably enjoy it.

I'm currently watching The Talented Mr. Ripley and trying not to compare it to Purple Noon, which is actually rather easy since their tones are pretty different. I'll give a fuller report once it's over.

Criterion never said anything about the replacement program being for a limited time only. In the 30 years that Criterion has been in existence, they've never failed to replace a faulty disc, whether LD, DVD, or BD.
