While I have yet to watch Pather Panchali, multiple things are mentioned in the review that should have instantly eliminated any chance of it receiving a 5/5 in PQ. It's not perfect, whether it's because they had to use multiple film elements or not.
But what if the source isn't perfect? If it replicates the source, then it should get a 5, regardless if the source has out of focus shots, scratches, etc. Nothing is perfect, or flawless, which the first rule of any "rating system."

This is my last post about this, since I don't want to keep arguing for a transfer I haven't seen entirely yet, also I just slightly disagreed from the few scenes I watched, since I just meant it would be a 4 or 4.5 PQ for me.

I don't think any movie PQ should get a pass or higher rating because of their importance, if anything I would say the opposite applies, a more important film should pass more strict standards.

No problem. I meant my comment to be chill and not argumentative. You are among my favorite posters here and I respect your opinion even if I disagree.

By importance, I was referring to the restoration and what an important undertaking that was. You'll find that the second and third film are even better, with only occasional blemishes, and I highly recommend you watch the piece on the restoration on the third disc. Mostly, I would enjoy the films. That's what really set this version apart from others, because the times I watched them before, the poor condition of the print distracted me from enjoying the films.

Yeah sorry if my post may have sounded a bit argumentative too, I guess I just missed your point.

I am really looking forward to these films since it is a blind buy for me, but I have enjoyed everything else by Ray.

I am certain I will not get distracted by the transfers as even if I may find small issues I have certainly watched and enjoyed films in much worse shape, and I am sure once I start watching them for the story and not just looking at the quality I will soon forget any problem, since I am not usually that strict about PQ.

After watching that many old films one gets used to problems from the sources, it is only when I get to watch a newer digitally shot film that I get more amazed by how perfect those usually look.

As much as I like the look of film, lately I don't care that much if a film is shot digitally, for example Hugo and The Martian look simply gorgeous, and I can't imagine those looking as good on film unless shot on 70mm or something like that.

I wouldn't say that I love the films, but they really hold your attention and are some of the most interesting titles in the collection without a doubt. The dialogue in FALILV is phenomenal and vision for Brazil is unbelievable. Both are solid 8/10's...not masterpieces IMO, but darn good.
To me, Fear and Loathing is a masterpiece drug tripping movie.

Just finished The Shop on Main Street. There are just no words. Most devastating movie and effective storytelling I've experienced in a long time.

Everyone needs to see this at least once.

And it needs an upgrade.

If the source they had to work with can't be restored into perfect condition, then it shouldn't be a 5/5 because it's not perfect. I'm not talking about out of focus shots or something like that, which is source related. I'm talking about scratches and such, colors faded, scenes that are noticeably out of place with the rest of the movie in terms of quality, etc. I've seen plenty of old movies that were worthy of being a 5/5. Something like Planet Terror where it is intentionally messed up is a different story.

This really is one of those must-see movies. For me, the movie was really good until...
[Show spoiler]the moment the old lady sees the people rounded up on the plaza and she instantly knows what's happening, her eyes go wide and she utters "pogrom!"
That moment, that one moment, for me lifts the entire film to a higher level.

Shame on me for ever doubting the brilliance of The Killers. Grade A storytelling, folks.

It should have a 6 Overall.

But then, I just might be a fan of the film and of the people involved.

How about that ending? It is quite a film. Even though it is technically Slovak, I consider it among the best of the Czech New Wave.

Great great movie! (I'm specifically talking about the 1946 version, although the 1964 version works for me as well.)

OK, now I really need to see this film. There are simply too many people talking about how good it is.

When I watched it prior to the Blu-ray release this year, I loved the introduction, but wasn't particularly keen on the pace of the remaining of the film.

Last night I watched it again and I was engrossed the entire time. So good!

I just finished watching Brian De Palma's Blow Out. What a fantastic early 80s thriller. The reviews I read were spot on. I'm a big John Travolta fan, and I have to agree that he gives one of his finest performances here. This will be part of my next Criterion order.

Yay! I quite liked it too. Especially given what John Travolta's become lately (or what he's done to himself), it's great to discover quality movies from when he was in his prime.

I've never seen Dressed to Kill, either. I have that on my DVR, and will watch it tonight.

I don't know what happened with him. The first Mission Impossible film is the last of his movies I enjoyed.

I enjoyed Dressed to Kill, except

[Show spoiler]I saw Carrie (and the beginning of this film, for that matter), so the ending was a bit of "fooled me once".
