Watch the trailer on here and I think it will answer your question: https://www.criterion.com/films/2863...q=autocomplete

I want the lot. I think this may be the strongest month for new releases since I started following Criterion like six years ago.

Cat People for me. I was hoping they would include Curse as well. I'll make do with my UK Mizoguchi and the MGM Blood Simple.

It would be cool to meet up at a Barnes & Noble this summer and talk up Criterion and buy a few movies during the upcoming sale, so let me know if you plan to come down to a store in July?

That would be cool. I plan to hit up the Waterfront store during the sale. I'm planning on going to next month's John Carpenter show at the Carnegie Music Hall in Munhall, so I'm planning on hitting up B&N earlier that day.

If I had to knock this month for anything, it would be the small amount of supplements on a couple of their releases.

Night Train to Munich

Quote:
  • Restored high-definition digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack
  • Conversation from 2010 between film scholars Peter Evans and Bruce Babington about director Carol Reed, screenwriters Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat, and the social and political climate in which Night Train to Munich was made
  • PLUS: An essay by film critic Philip Kemp
The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum

Quote:
  • New, restored 4K digital transfer, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray
  • New interview with critic Phillip Lopate about the evolution of director Kenji Mizoguchi’s style
  • New English subtitle translation
  • PLUS: An essay by film scholar Dudley Andrew
I really wish both releases had more stuff included. The rest of the titles are thankfully much stronger here.

No, I haven't.
This is supposed to be a newer restoration than the transfer used for the existing bluray, right?

September has an excellent line-up!

I'm definitely in for Cat People and Dekalog.

I will rent Beyond the Valley of the Dolls, The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum, and Valley of the Dolls from Amazon Instant Video once the Criterion version is released. I'll also watch my existing DVD of Night Train to Munich before I commit to a purchase (I love Reed's film-noir trilogy).

A pass for me on Blood Simple (I wasn't a huge fan when I watched it a few years ago) and Zatôichi: The Blind Swordsman.

Terrific release slate for September . I plan on buying all of the September releases but the Polish set...pass on that.

4K transfer for The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum...I will take that over more fluff any day.

In the 4 years to this day that I've been on this forum, I must say this is the most epic month of new Criterion releases I've ever seen.

There is so much material here I don't even know where to begin!

The complete Dekalog from Kieslowski? I mean, this is insane and incredible!

Blood Simple is utterly jawdropping. One of the greatest film noirs in history, not to mention best debuts for a director (Joel Coen). The artwork is also pretty amazing for this release.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls is one CRAZY film. Roger Ebert wrote the screenplay and I remember catching this on cable tv years ago (maybe once or twice), and I'll never forget how much of a "trip" this was.

Valley of the Dolls. Haven't seen this one yet but prob. will blind-buy it cause this kind of film is right up my alley.

The other new films, Cat People and The Story of the Last Chrysanthemum, warrant a viewing before I purchase these (if I do that is).

An upgrade of Carol Reed's Night Train to Munich is lovely too.

And...last but not least... a re-release of Zatoichi too?!

Good lord. What a month!

What a month! I will definitely be getting Blood Simple, Cat People and The Decalogue. I've seen Decalogue: One and Two, but the old DVD box set was so bad that after a while, I decided to just wait for this release.

I'm also stoked for both Valley of the Dolls films and I'm glad that Roger Ebert's commentary on Beyond has been carried over.

Yeah, a talking head interview and a leaflet for each. They're not priced like budget releases, though.

It doesn't say they both directed it, it says "a film by Joel and Ethan Coen", seeing as Ethan produced and they both wrote, it's not inaccurate at all.
